The Raiders coach credits Goff for being as tough as he is, which is part of what makes him such a “great” quarterback.

“One thing that always impressed me about Goff was how tough he was. If you go back and watch him play as a true freshman at Cal, you would be surprised that he’s even still playing football. He got destroyed. He got beat up repeatedly. I don’t even know if they won a game,” Gruden said on a conference call Wednesday.

As a true freshman, Goff and the Golden Bears went 1-11. The following season, they were 5-7. The year after that, they finished 8-5 and made and won their first bowl game since 2011.

Cal regressed once again in 2016 after Goff left, finishing the season 5-7 behind Davis Webb. His impact on the program can’t be overstated and Gruden knows it.

“He helped bring that team to respectability and put them in a bowl game with great toughness. He has an incredible pocket presence,” the coach said. “I mean this kid can stand in there and make great throws under serious pressure. I think he’s earned the respect of his teammates and they’ve surrounded him with quite a system of football and some really talented players.”

Is this pre-game coach speak?

As in: if I can I will destroy him in that pocket and show how weak I really think he is?

This is from Gruden’s qb camp before Goff was drafted. Of course he pretty much said only great things about everybody who was on the show.

No it was from this week. The article is from 9/5 and it says: .....[etc. etc.] ... "Gruden said on a conference call Wednesday."

Here's more from that same conference call of 9/5:

On if QB Jared Goff is on track with where he expected to him to be when he hosted Goff on his Gruden’s QB Camp show)

Goff's toughness has really stood out to me as well. I don't just mean physical toughness but the mental aspect as well, it's tough to just pull yourself up time and again and not start thinking about bailing early.

That is the kind of stuff that gets his teammates to rally around him. I hear things like "Goff's not a leader" just because he's laid back but in my view there are different types of leaders and guys will follow the man they respect whether loud and Rah-Rah or laid back.

He also has skills that makes a huge difference. I could not believe the transformation from his rookie year to last year, I don't think I have ever seen such a transformation in my time and if he can improve upon that well we have a winner and guys always follow a winner.

Goff's footwork, pocket presence, and very quiet/understated competitive fire are going to take him a long way. I think he will become one of the best QBs in the game sooner rather than later. Has always reminded me of Montana.

My bad, it just sounded like the qb school. I remember him gushing about goff’s toughness at Cal and how terrible his protection was, and how Goff would stand in and deliver good passes.

Yeah he does sound like the old qb school stuff and that's probably his basis for saying what he said this week.

I think there is something to Goff's toughness. Some guys have a knack for absorbing hits without serious injury. Russell Wilson isn't very big. He's been sacked a lot and taken a whole bunch of hits. And he's never missed a game. I think Goff is like that. I think he just knows how to go down and land the right way without getting hurt.

Make no mistake, the ability to keep your eyes downfield while enduring an NFL pass rush is a significantly studly trait in my eyes.

It may not show up in the stats but there have been several times I have been at a game and if Goff had only another .1 or .2 seconds before a sack there may have been a few more TD's or big plays in his quiver.
