Obviously, the Patriots will have to sign at least one quarterback soon — most likely in time for him to take some snaps in Thursday’s preseason opener. The departure of Flynn may be related to his hamstring injury, which kept him on the non-football injury list for the start of camp. It’s possible that the Patriots would bring Flynn back when and if he’s healthy enough to play. For now, expect to see a lot of Garoppolo in the preseason. Field Yates of ESPN.com reports that the Patriots will sign Lindley to join Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo on the team’s depth chart. Matt Flynn opened camp with that job, but reports earlier on Monday had him being dropped from the roster.Lindley made two regular season starts for the Cardinals last season and saw action in another game. He completed just 48.4 percent of his passes in those appearances before going 16-of-28 in the postseason loss. He also started four games for the Cardinals in 2012.The Patriots surely hope that Lindley doesn’t make any starts for them this season, but the fact that he made any last year is a reminder that things don’t always play out as planned. If nothing else, the Patriots need someone to take reps in practice and back up Garoppolo early in the regular season if Brady’s suspension remains in place.
