Reports: Pat Shurmur To Coach Minnesota Vikings

by Blaine Grisak 14m ago

After interviewing with both the Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings, former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur has decided to join the Vikings to assumably be the running backs coach according to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer. However, whether or not he will be the running backs coach has yet to be confirmed.

Head coach Jeff Fisher had been looking to make improvements to their offensive coaching staff and interviewed Shurmur to be the passing game coordinator. Shurmur would have made a lot of sense for the Rams as he had experience working with quarterback Nick Foles, who the Rams traded for last offseason. Under Shurmur’s coaching, Foles threw 40 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions.

With Shurmur now off the market, it is uncertain what further changes the Rams are going to make to the offensive coaching staff. Fisher also interviewed John DeFilippo, however, he was also hired away by the Eagles to be their quarterback coach.

This is not a good sign as this is now two coaches Jeff Fisher hasn’t been able to hire. Whether the interviews didnt go well or there wasn’t interest is unclear. However, DeFilippo and Shurmur would have been huge upgrades to the coaching staff and at the end of the day Fisher failed to convince either coach to stay.

The Rams had one of the worst offenses in the NFL last year and will need to do something this offseason to make improvements if they want to take the next step and be a playoff caliber team. Whether it be further coaching changes or personnel changes, the Rams must do something to get better production next season.

At least that ends the Shurmur-Bradford reunited and it feels so good, back to the future speculation.

But as predicted, no one wants this passing game coordinator gig. Organizational failure not to frame this as an OC search (whether that's what it turned out to be or not...not like Boras had other NFL prospects). So that's over and done. Within the next week, expect the organizational rhetoric to start being ramped up...about how Boras should have been 4-0, really grew into the job, did wonders with the run game, etc., etc.

But hey those 60-yard FG attempts as an actual in-game strategy sure are interesting.

This is becoming a joke because I just don't understand what is going on...Maybe the fact that Fisher only has one year left on his contract, but assistants usually sign 3 year deals so they would have that and IMO the Rams were offering a better job I just don't get it? Were they offered the position? That's my question because they should make and offer and tell them to take it or leave right now, but Fisher feels IMO, if you don't want to join me then fine...IDK this is getting odd and are the Rams going to be able to hire anybody?

I don't think there's any way that these guys are being offered OC jobs. As bad as uncertainty can be, I think they'd take a coordinator job over a positional job. And let's not forget, we're talking DeFilioppo and Shurmur here. Not Bill Walsh and Don Coryell. Both of these guys should be jumping at OC jobs not weighing their options.

The only hope is that the Rams are eyeing someone still in the playoffs.

I don't Fisher ever intended to hire anyone else. Boras is the guy. Him and Keenum worked their magic together. Didn't Keenum surpass 100 yards last game?

Wow.... Shurmer turns down a possible OC gig for a running back coach demotion. As some have suggested, I doubt the Rams ever made an offer or Fishers is seen as a toxic dead man walking.

Time to get used to more Boras ball!!
