Chargers apply to trademark Los Angeles names

by Nathan Fenno

As the San Diego Chargers negotiate a possible move to Los Angeles, the franchise has already taken steps to secure a new name.

The Chargers applied to trademark “Los Angeles Chargers” and “LA Chargers” two days after NFL owners approved the Rams’ relocation to L.A. last week.

Signed by A.G. Spanos, the Chargers’ president of business operations, the applications seek to cover a sprawling array of products including football helmets, ear muffs and golf balls.

Anastasia Danias, a senior vice president for the NFL, is listed as the attorney of record.

The Chargers have an option to join the Rams in L.A. that expires Jan. 15, 2017. The option can be extended one year if voters approve public financing for a new stadium in San Diego.

If the Chargers pass on moving to L.A., then the Oakland Raiders will have an identical one-year option.

The Rams, who are developing a stadium in Inglewood that’s expected to be ready for the 2019 season, started formal negotiations with the Chargers on

Stranger - if you go back and edit your post and put a space between the word [quote] and the tweet on both sides - then the tweet will show.

:)

Doesn't really matter here, but in some threads it's hard to tell which one is being referenced.

Done.

Actually, I put a space after the tweet code, but not before it. I gotta remember to do BOTH :)

As much as I'd prefer the Rams as the only team in LA, I don't mind the Chargers coming here as much as I'd hate the Raiders being back.

Aside from the baggage that comes with the Raiders, I would prefer the Chargers because hardly anyone in LA gives a crap about them. That would allow the Rams to more thoroughly dominate the LA market's fanbase.

Let Spanos come here & rot. Fine by me.

I agree.

Spanos has quite a dilemma.

If he moves to L.A. the Raiders might take SD. If he stays in SD, Raiders can come to L.A.

Two bad outcomes. I wonder if he's regretting partnering up with the Raiders?

Did he conjure up the entire partnership deal just to help him keep Kroenke out of LA?

After acting like a spoiled kid, Spanos is in a bind. Laughing my ass off.
