not sure the pats ever planned to keep cooks beyond the 2017 season, their cap hit for cooks would have been 5 times more in 2018, plus the pats have a history of jettisoning guys regardless if they perform... anyway a bi-product of this "modern nfl", i.e. leveraging rookie contracts, dealing guys instead of paying big second/third contracts, seems to be the nfl's realization that you don't need a guy to be in a system for years before he pays dividends, gels, instead you can plug a guy in and hit the ground running.

So Cooks' hit for this year goes up from 8.5 mil to 11 due to signing bonus and not sure if this distinguishes between the fully guaranteed number and the guaranteed for injury numbers that we were hearing about earlier...

My understanding from looking at several reports is that the $50.5M number is only for injury. The full guarantee is only $20.5M.
