I always equate it this way. Winning is great and losing sucks. Goff was fine....very good actually.....in 2017 and 2018, then he forgot how to play. Same with Warner from 99-01, then 2002 and good riddance. Everett was terrific in 87, 88 and almost all of 89 but then he fell apart and forgot how to play. It's weird how that happens to guys!

Hyperbole. Just 2 quick examples: the Tampa game. The Rams couldn't run, Tampa was answering scores, the Rams had to throw 51 times to win the game and it turned on a last minute score to break a tie. Tampa's defense was ranked 6th and they were not easy to play against. That was all Goff. 2nd example, Goff coming off the bench with an injury in a road playoff game after a week of not practicing with the 1s, and playing well.

2019 includes good games from him too and that was behind a problem OL that ended up starting 3 inexperienced injury replacements and changing centers (for 4 moves total). When I ask people to give me examples of qbs who excel behind problem OLs like that, I never get any.

Goff was inconsistent in 2020 but that's not the bad qb you seem to be misremembering. You're talking about him as though he were Wentz.

And I have nothing against the trade--I like the idea of a 13 year vet with his physical talent. But Stafford had an inconsistent 5th year too with just as many bad games as Goff in 2020. It's being a 13 year vet that makes the difference. I also figure McVay will listen to Stafford--it would help things all the way around if he did.

Funny how most experts say this QB swap is a big win for LA. Vegas agrees. Eye test passes after all I've seen from both.
Again, Goff is a good QB. No disputing that. He pulled out a game here or there too. He didn't win just as many and pitched a few real stinkers over the last couple years.
Were in better (bigger) hands now.

As I keep saying though, Stafford had as many bad games in his 5th year as Goff did. His real stinkers tally is the same in his 5th year.

There is no doubting MS has more raw physical talent but then that's true of him stacked up against all but a few qbs in the league.

The real difference is, MS is a 13 year vet who has been there done that and seen it all.

That's why I don't complain (at all, even a little) about the trade.

At the same time, I think McV was part of the problem with Goff--they weren't a mesh and it messed with JG's confidence. In contrast, that is not going to happen with MS--IMO McV will listen to MS.

My biggest problem with Stafford is his age. He has a very short window to win a super bowl. I say two years because I looked up the ages of super bowl winning quarterbacks. Tom Brady is the GOAT, so other than Brady, there are only two. TWO!

Naw it's not "shortly." Careers have ups and downs. Who knows how it will go year by year for either Stafford or Goff.

Trying to come up with short term "absolute lifetime grades" for these guys is the problem that led to all the hyperbole trashing Goff way beyond what is reasonable.

And if Stafford happens to start out slow, so what? He will find his groove.
