PARAM wrote:That is huge. But....the draft is also about planning into the future. Let's say they draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd but Stafford wins the SB next year AND DOESN'T RETIRE. He decides he likes the taste and wants to play in 2026 and 2027......and is still playing like a stud. The Rams can always trade that QB they drafted, especially if there's a better one coming along. But that's a stretch.

Ramsman34 recently said most franchise QBs not named Brady came from the 1st round and that's true. Just going by SB QBs, 25 of the 50 starters the last 25 years were 1st round picks. Of the last 25 winners, 13 were first round QBs (and 7 were Brady). Warner was the only UDFA to win over that span and there were a 2nd round pick (Brees), two 3rd round picks (Wilson, Foles), seven 6th round pick (Brady) and a 9th round pick***.

***Who?

Lets say Stafford has a good year and decides to hang it up? Who is the QB now?

I'm not saying the Rams should just draft a QB to draft a QB. If one of the second tier guys looks like they could be groomed into a starter, draft that guy, if not we have to wait until next year, it is a gamble.

I could care less if he sits on the bench longer, love a QB learning from Stafford day and day out.

Stafford is playing somewhere between 0 and 3 more years as a Ram.

Most likely 1?

We don't know. Maybe the Rams do...

IMO McCord is no longer a day 3 prospect. He's either at the top of the 2nd round or could be on the board at 26. This would be replacing Stafford with a younger version which isn't a bad thing. After a year behind Stafford he presents a low risk option. I have to wonder if the Niners aren't targeting him at pick 11.

But if Sean is serious about wanting more mobility at the QB position then I think they will take a long look at Riley Leonard. His bowl play has elevated him to probably go anywhere from the middle of the first round to middle of the second round. IMO the Rams could attempt to trade into the #4 spot to jump the Niners who might not extend Purdy. They would then have their pick of McCord, Leonard or anyone else they might want.

People make too much of "over-drafting" which doesn't make much sense. Case in point had the Rams taken Nacua on the first or second day everyone would have scoffed. But if you hit on that player then it all becomes irrelevant. Remember Cooper was a 3rd round pick. IMO you get the players you want and need and public opinion be damned.

The thing I like about Leonard is his developmental trajectory. It shows he's coachable and has a good work ethic. He's also more versatile than McCord. McCord can move just as Stafford could when he was younger. But Leonard makes the QB a completely different threat level from the QB position. That is what McVay wants IMO. Yeah he's more developmental than someone like McCord but Riley will have a redshirt year to develop behind a HOF QB.

If Leonard is who they want they would be foolish and sit at 26 hoping he will drop. This team is essentially built and ready to win now. The single hole in the roster is QB1. I think they will address both the QB1, ILB, LT, RT and CB positions in this draft. The ILB position IMO might be addressed with the Kupp trade for someone like Anzalone. CB was addressed with the Forbes signing. LT has a bridge in McDermott so they can draft an OT on the second day. RT could be McClendon or perhaps Leveston or they can draft a RT. The bottom line is that I see them filling all the remaining holes in the roster this year.
