Steelers agree to trade OT Marcus Gilbert to Cardinals
By Kevin Patra
Around the NFL Writer

The low compensation signals the Steelers were ready to release Gilbert had they not found a trade partner. Pittsburgh sheds $4.9 million in the trade. Gilbert is entering the last season of his contract.

The deal comes a day after the Steelers invested heavily elsewhere on their offensive line.

The pickup could be a massive steal for the Cardinals, who saw a revolving door at both offensive tackle spots in 2018.

If healthy, Gilbert remains one of the better right tackles in the NFL and should help boost one of the worst blocking units in the league last season.

Health, however, has been an issue for the 31-year-old the past two seasons. He missed 11 games in 2018 due to a knee issue. In 2017 he missed time due to a hamstring injury and was suspended four games late in the season for violating the league policy against performance-enhancing substances.

Taking a flyer that Gilbert will be healthy and motivated in his new landing spot is a good gamble by the Cards.

Now the bajillion-dollar question: Which quarterback will he be blocking for?

Agent's Take: What Demarcus Lawrence, Earl Thomas and other key defensive players should target on new deals

C.J. Mosley BAL • ILB • 57
Contract package: $67.5 million for five years
Overall guarantees: $37.5 million
Fully guaranteed at signing: $27 million
First three years: $42 million

Earl Thomas SEA • FS • 29
Contract package: $56 million for four years
Overall guarantees: $30 million
Fully guaranteed at signing: $30 million

Trey Flowers NE • DE • 98
Contract package: $90 million for five years
Overall guarantees: $55 million
Fully guaranteed at signing: $40 million
First three years: $57.75 million

Dante Fowler LAR • LB • 56
Contract package: $72.5 million for five years
Overall guarantees: $40 million
Fully guaranteed at signing: $32.5 million
First three years: $47 million

Fowler got a chance to reinvent himself when the Rams gave the Jaguars a 2019 third-round pick and a 2020 fifth-round pick to get him at last season's trading deadline in late October. His career never quite got untracked in Jacksonville. Fowler tore his left ACL in Jacksonville's first minicamp practice a week after being the third overall pick in the 2015 draft. Although Fowler had a career high eight sacks in 2017, the Jaguars declined to pick up their fifth-year option on him for 2019. $14.2 million was a pretty steep price for someone who operated primarily as a situational pass rusher.

Fowler wasn't a consistent pass rushing force after his arrival in Los Angeles but more than validated the trade against the Saints in the NFC Championship Game. His overtime hit on quarterback Drew Brees while he was throwing caused the interception which helped set up the game winning field goal. Fowler also tied for the Rams' postseason lead in sacks with 1.5.

It wouldn't be surprising if some team gets seduced by the potential that made Fowler an early first-round pick and his playoff performance. Not having the fifth-year option exercised may work in Fowler's favor in a manner similar to how it did with 2014 fourth overall pick Sammy Watkins, but not necessarily to the same degree. The wide receiver received a $16 million per year deal from the Chiefs last March in free agency.

Those numbers seem a bit inflated to me. Given that they are coming from an agent, that’s not surprising.

Look at their numbers and ages.. very close. And KC may have paid more to avoid the compensation formula.
CJ will get right around that, imo.. if not a little less.

Hyde was completely ineffective last year. He’s merely a backup on that team getting 3 mill

You can choose to ignore the rest of the season, but I don't think other teams will. They'll look at the circumstances of CJ's play.

I'll add that I think KC is a lot like the Rams and saw what having a good between the tackles back could bring to their offense. Hyde's numbers will be appreciably better this year, imo.

The released twice bit is such mullarkey, and just gets regurgitated out of laziness. Had CJ been released last year during FA it would have been a totally different story. Denver screwed up their cap and released him April, long after rosters were settled.
But hey, stick with the narrative, it’s the easy way to go...
KC will have a crowded backfield and will be interesting if they bring back either West or Ware.
We’ll see about CJ, once the dust clears on LeVeon it should open some things up
