Matthews was due a fully guaranteed $2 million roster bonus, but his contract also had offsetting language for $2 million.

An "offset" usually kicks in if a player signs a new contract with another team. Perhaps there are other contingencies. I'd like to be educated about those.

Not sure how an "offset" counts against a "fully guaranteed" amount. ESPN isn't sharing all the details.

Following their decision to cut Gurley, the Rams owed him a $7.55 million roster bonus. Because of offset language in Gurley's contract, the team does not have to pay him $2.5 million of what is owed.

Out in the media, the math is $7.55 mill - $2.5 mill (offset) = $5.05 Mill that Gurley hasn't received.

The Rams need to come forth with a public response to assure Rams fans, NFL fans and perspective Rams players that they will honor their contracts.

The article didn't give a due date as specified by the contract. Is there one? If the Rams haven't defaulted then maybe they aren't really past due.

Edited to add. It would be nice to hear from a former NFL agent or team executive that is familiar with SOP regarding issues like this.

Whatever the explanation, it’s not a good look to hide under a rock when accused of stiffing employees out of money they believe they are owed. If Gurley and Matthews are in the wrong, the Rams need to say so, or perception will become reality — and other agents and free agents will become less inclined to trust the Rams.

What is see is 2 disgruntled ex-Rams whose feelings are hurt and are puffing out their chests. I don't think either player expected to be let go or traded and are still pissed about it. These were 2 superstar players with huge egos.

I can't see one reason why the Rams wouldn't pay them if they had to. There might be some people who think this makes the Rams "brand" look bad, but there will be others who see it as I do.

To bitch about this in the public at time like this makes them look worse than the "brand". Let's see what Brandon Cooks has to say now that he's gone too.

I'm thinking that there is some legal mumbo jumbo that the media isn't aware of ... like the "announcement" of Gurley being signed by Atlanta, and it officially being registered with the NFL. And like a specified amount of time ... after the NFL recognizes the signing, not after a verbal agreement is leaked to the media....? Do NFL contracts have a withdraw-the-offer/acceptance clause within a certain period of time?

I doubt that the Rams have done anything illegal.
