This is Staley’s move and just a 1 year deal. Cool with it. But another revival project tho.

Last year without his DC (and LB coach) was his worst year. Before that, "decline"? The only number that went down was sacks (from 7 to 4.5 to 4). His QB hits went up. His TFL went up. His passes defensed went up. Methinks he missed good coaching.

A comparison between Fowler and Floyd, counting sacks, Tackles for Loss, & QB hits. That is, disruptive plays in the backfield. (I know it's not a real stat...ideally I would have done qb pressures, but I can't find those for individual players.)

YEAR SACKS TFL QB HITS TTL

Floyd under Fangio/Staley

2016 7.0 … 6 … 9 = 22
2017 4.5 … 8 … 12 = 24.5
2018 4.0 … 9 … 11 = 24
ttl = 15.5 .. 23 … 32 = 70

Floyd under Pagano

2018 3.0 … 3 … 12 = 18

Fowler in Jacksonville

2016 4.0 … 6 … 11 = 21
2017 8.0 … 7 … 10 = 25
2018 4.0 … 5 … 6 = 15
ttl 16 … 18 … 27 = 61

Fowler in LA

2018 11.5 … 16 … 16 = 43.5

Those number smack of an improvement at the position.

Other than AD (not Anthony Davis) our Dline got stoned a lot against bigger O-lines. Hope to see that trend change with these new guys.

I haven't read what scheme Staley is going to run. To your knowledge is the D staying in a 3-4 base ?

He's running a Fangio style defense, the very D that gave us trouble in Chicago in 2018. Though it's unclear how much Staley will stick to Fangio's scheme and how much he will vary it.

We do know they're staying in a straight 3/4---that much has been said by the team officially.
