den-the-coach wrote:Sorry Gentlemen did not look at the previous page....Vermeil did okay with Jaworski in Philly and Trent Green with the Chiefs so I would give him the edge over Chuck Knox, however, Vermeil was Knox special team coach for one year until he got hired at UCLA in 1974.

I'll give you Jaworski, and therefore Vermeil over Knox. But i don't think he sniffed out Trent Green. (And let's not forget Joe Germaine who Vermeil drafted on the Rams and then traded for at KC.)

BTW, reading Jaworski's wiki and found this little gem:

In the spring of 1977, Jaworski was traded by the Rams to the Philadelphia Eagles for former All-Pro tight end Charle Young; the trade was illegal under NFL by-laws since both Jaworski and Young had completed their contracts, but no one raised any objection to the deal so it was permitted to stand.

I really loved Jim Everett, or at least that era in Rams football with Ernie Zampese and Norv Turner on the staff. It was the best Rams offense i'd ever seen, until the GSOT showed up.

Everett had a great arm. Those sideline outs to Henry Ellard were just unstoppable. The ball got there before the defense had a chance. And then Ellard would do that little step back circle around move instead of stepping out of bounds which usually got him 5 more yards.

I know he'll never live down the phantom sack against SF in the playoffs and we'll always remember the Jim Rome Chris Everett incident, but one of the thing i remember (though i had to google it to find the details) was Everett getting in the face of a defensive player after a play and when they asked him what he was doing he said something like, "i know it was stupid 'cause he'll want to kill me but i figure he already wants to kill me..."

Anyway, found the Times article about that game (a 37-14 win over the Cardinals in 1989):

http://articles.latimes.com/1989-11-20/ ... am-defense

The Rams were so tired of their recent fate that common sense sometimes escaped them, most notably when Everett--nicknamed "Blade" for his slight build--gave Cardinals' defensive end Freddie Joe Nunn (6-4, 260, forearms that resemble anvils) a stern in-your-face lecture late in the third quarter after Nunn rode Everett out of bounds on a scramble.

The amazing thing was that Nunn just stood there and took it, explaining later that he didn't need a manslaughter charge on his hands.

"It was no match," Nunn said. "Why waste my time? I might get a penalty. Actually, I kind of enjoyed it. It pumped me up. I was hoping the refs would pull a flag on him. But it's real hard to take from a quarterback. Real hard. What surprised me was that I took it."

Everett was relieved that Nunn had more control over his emotions than he did in the situation. You know how easy it is to break a quarterback in two?

"I carried it as far as I ever want to carry it," Everett said. "You might call me a third-degree idiot."

Everett thought he was out of bounds when Nunn struck, although it didn't appear that close on the replay and no penalty was called. Everett was determined to get his point across, though, whatever risks to life and limb.

"I just told him what a nice, cheap hit that was and how much I liked him at that particular time of my life," Everett said. "It's heated out there, you're going 100 m.p.h.. I don't particularly like it, but it happens."

Everett, realizing later the logic of his outburst, apologized to Nunn after the game, but he refused to apologize for his style of play.

"I'm not trying to do anything to endanger the team," he said. "But I will offer my opinion if I think it's wrong. . .I put myself in a position where the guy wants to kill me the rest of the game. That's probably not a good deal. But he wants to kill me anyway."

He's our all time leading passer, 24th all time in the NFL, great Ram, one of my favorites.

And, only 11 more days till camp...

Didn't Vermeil want Hostetler when Green went down in '99? Or was it Martz?

Plus, wasn't Vermeil on the Rams staff when Jaworski was a Ram? Not saying DV shouldn't get that credit but wouldn't that just fall under the "friends of" category more than DV ferreting out a QB?

Yeah, the story is Vermeil initially wanted to sick with Banks after '98, that Martz convinced him otherwise and they signed Green since Martz coached him in Washington. Then when Green went down, Vermeil initially wanted to reach out to Hoestetler but Martz told Vermeil Warner was up to the task.

I don't know if it was luck or just Vermeil's process, but somehow he ended up making all the right decisions...
