Hacksaw wrote:Just a thought. Could McVay have lost the coaches room as the season imploded? (Players too?)
It's probably more of a signal he's cutting out and letting the coaching staff get a head start, but it could have been an adios. The former might explain that lost look.

I think it’s more of the later. But yeah, it’s all a mess. We’re in limbo. Who knows who’s leaving. AD isn’t talking. Could be we are in for a significant rebuild. Snead has a difficult job ahead, me thinks.

Gareth wrote:Isn't it the media that is constantly bringing it up? As far as I know, McVay himself is only answering questions. You can say he should just shut up and not answer but that's just not how he conducts himself. He's always been very pleasant and accommodating with reporters.

As long as he is under contract with the RAMS, he should not be talking about retirement to the media. Just say, "I'm the head coach of the RAMS, no better job than this one."

Him discussing his retirement may dissuade FAs from coming here, though they may want to play for McVay, the FAs might think he will bail at any moment.

As an alpha male, leader of men, it is unbecoming to be whining about your multi-million dollar job to the media. The ink is barely dry on his contract and he bemoans that the gig is too time consuming. Dude, put your assistants to work, get 'em in there early, have them stay late.

I dont think it is as bad as some have stated. We just need to hear from McVay on whether is in or out and sooner the better. I expect if McVay is in, he will be 110% in, if he is out I expect Raheem or Thomas Brown to take the reigns and hire a Frank Reich, Kliff or Zac. I dont think the sky is falling, the Rams have known about this possibility for awhile, but again the quicker we have an answer the better.

McVay got us to two Super Bowls in 4 years, that buys him this opportunity. We were a laughing stock of team under Linny/Spags/Fisher. I dont forget that.

Maybe he's fine and we just need to get used to it?

Nah, he is the leader of this team. Leaders set a higher bar for themselves. Though we should always set the highest of standards for ourselves, when you are in a position of authority then it is imperative that those who are putting their trust in you are not disappointed.

Elvis wrote:Schrager apparently saying, again, that if McVay steps away it would likely be temporary and maybe McVay would still be involved this season but not as HC.

If that's the case, Rams would not be making a big hire for HC, might be Raheem at top and Zac Taylor running the offense, something like that.

That sounds ridiculous. What is going to change in a year? Then again he may not return? If he leaves then the RAMS move forward with a new HC, not interim, but a new HC and a staff, of his choosing, to back him up.

PARAM wrote:Hearing from Whitworth on the Eisen Show, McVay is extremely tough on himself. AW said he knows he loves coaching.

>>>Maybe he's got a confidence problem. He's given his assistants permission to seek jobs elsewhere. Coen was rumored to be heading back to Kentucky a month ago so he's already gone. But the rest? Suppose nobody gets a HC gig or takes an assistant offer elsewhere in the next month and McVay realizes ain't nobody deserting him? Confidence problem solved? Maybe. Maybe that ain't it at all.

Good grief, now we are doing psycho-analysis on our HC? This is starting to look like Scott Linehan territory when Linehan lost confidence after an 0-2 start.

There are 8 current head coaches in the NFL who've won a SB. Some won it early in their career. Some it took almost forever. There is no rhyme or reason to what happens afterwards. Some have been fired. Some retired. Some keep on coaching. Similar to the theory, a young, highly touted QBs success depends on what team and head coach he goes to, same could be said for head coaches and the franchise they go to.

Belichick in New England is the outlier. 9 Superbowls, 6 Championships, he calls his own shots. He'll leave when he's ready to leave. Tomlin in Pittsburgh is the classic example of quality organization that sticks with the head coach. He won the SB in his 2nd year there, lost it in his 4th and has been to 1 CCG since (12 years). He's in no danger of losing his job despite not sniffing the SB but once in 12 years. I like to think that's the type of organization the Rams have become under Kroenke. At least when it comes to what they do for McVay.

He came in as a boy genius and went to the SB in his 2nd year. Then won it in his 5th. I think he's confirmed the projections attached to him when he arrived. Is he afraid of a long rebuild? Fuck no. But that's really not the case anyway. Yeah, the talking heads and some fans who believe them think the Rams are currently in that position. But with a few tweaks a few cap adjustments and the boy genius running things, nobody should be surprised if they were back in the big game in a year or two. But it makes good fodder for the current situation.

NEWSFLASH!!! It ain't easy to win the Superbowl.

Landry won 2 in 29 years during a time the players were like cattle with no possibility to leave the team unless they retired. He lost another 3 SBs. And he's one of the most successful head coaches in the history of the NFL. 250-162-6, 20-16 in the postseason. In the same era, Don Shula won 2, his 3rd and 4th season with Miami. He lost 2 Superbowls and 2 CCGs his last 24 years with the Dolphins. He also lost a SB with the Colts in his 6th season there, prior to his time in Miami. And he is the winningest coach in NFL history. Between them 578 regular season wins, another 39 in the postseason (617 total) and they won just 4 Superbowl Championships.

McVay got to a SB and lost in his 2nd year, won it in his 5th. Some fans pine about his legacy. If he retires, it'll be tainted. Sure but is that something he's concerned over? I don't think so. He came in with high expectations of himself, was lauded by experts who expected him to succeed and he did. In spades.

Is he letting the franchise and his players down, should he leave? Not at all. Judging by the way his bosses are handling it speaks volumes and his players, to a man, understand what he going through more than any of us. They all say the same thing. Whatever is best for him. The way this is all unfolding, I expect the franchise to be fine. Maybe he'll even be back in 2023.

Here's the current NFL head coaches with the Lombardi.

Belichick (28 yrs) 6 SBs, 9 Conf Championships
Reid (24 yrs) 1 SB, 3 CC
Carroll (17 yrs) 1 SB, 2 CC
Tomlin (16 yrs) 1 SB, 2 CC
McCarthy (16 yrs) 1 SB, 1 CC
Harbaugh (15 yrs) 1 SB, 1 CC
McVay (6 yrs) 1 SB, 2 CC
Pederson (6 yrs) 1 SB, 1 CC

and one who may be back in the NFL next year...Sean Payton, 15 yrs, 1 SB, 1 CC.

The rumor mill has it that the Saints will not accept anything less than a first round draft pick for Sean Payton.

Who here wants to give up our first available first round draft pick in seven or eight years for Sean Payton?

Not me.

Concur. At some point, we will need this chip for someone who is on the field.
