Not exactly. Warner was dinged up so McCown got a start. Played well enough that Warner didn't come back when he thought he was ready to.

Yeah, he wasn't lighting the world on fire but he was new to the team and the team wasn't all that settled under Green. This was 2005 and the Cardinals started 0-3 under Warner when he got hurt in the third game. McCown didn't do much in relief but got the start the next week on MNF in Mexico and threw for 385 and 2/0 and the Cardinals won. He followed that up with a less spectacular game but put up 398 and 2/3. After that he started to regress and the short lived heroics were over. Warner had had less than 3 starts to show what he could do so they went back to him. His first game back he was definitely rusty but even without his gloves, his last 6 starts were relatively solid completing about 65% with 9/4.

McCown was actually doing pretty well by the end of that year completing over 70% of his passes his last two starts when Warner got dinged again but it wasn't enough overall. At the end of the year, the Cardinals kept Warner and let McCown move on. Warner's fumbling issues came to a head in 2006 when he actually lost the starting job to Leinart but by 2007, he adopted the gloves, the fumbling was curtailed and he took the starting job back for good when Leinart was hurt against the Rams.
