Bear with me here:

Quarterback play is important. The most important player performance on the team. We all know that. It's NFL football in this day and age.
Fisher is a defensive minded coach. His QBs haven't exactly lit things up. Neither have his teams. In 22 years his teams have had double digit wins just 6 times. And in those 6 years, his offenses AVERAGED 19 TD passes (115 total). The Rams had 116 TD passes from 99-01. Certainly his offenses have never been inspiring but as Ram fans, even his best years wouldn't be inspiring for us. The "quarterback excuse" seems like a non-starter when it comes to Fisher, no?

PARAM wrote:Bradford? Bradford played 16 games Fisher's first year here. They went 7-8-1. That unfortunatly was the high point of QB play until drafting Goff..

Had a minute so i looked it up:

Year, Offensive Points Per Game, Rank
2012: 16.1 28th
2013: 18.9 23rd
2014: 18.1 23rd
2015: 15.8 31st
2016: 14.9 32nd

So even though Bradford played all 16 in '12, that was not our best offensive year. And amazingly, things have gotten substantially worse since Shottenheimer left for Georgia. Although maybe not surprisingly since that's when it appears Fisher got more involved with the offense...

This is why the argument of continuity drives me nuts.
Fisher has been incredibly consistent over his career as a HC, and there's really no evidence to support that he may be able to turn this around.
He's changed coaches and players and the outcome is the same
Just like it was in Tennessee
The only uncertainty to me is in asking the question of, "How good would Steve McNair have been had he played for a different coach?"

McNair played for the offensive genius, Brian Billick in 2006. Completed 63% of 468 passes for 3050 yards (6.52 yds/att) with 16 TD and 12 Int for an 82.5 QBR. The Ravens went 13-3 but were one and done in the postseason (15-6 to Manning's Colts). McNair was 33 and Brian Billick was one year away from ESPN.

Brian Billick, aptly brought up in the thread about QB.
He took over a disaster of a team from Ted Marchibroda than won only 16 games in 3 years before him and yet got them to 8 wins year 1 and 12 wins and the playoffs year 2. Billick had winning seasons and playoff teams where his QB were Tony Banks, Elvis Grbac, Trent Dilfer, Kyle Boller, Anthony Wright, a washed up McNair etc
Had a career record of 80-64 (.556 WP) with 5 winning seasons, 4 playoff teams (including 1 SB winner) in 9 seasons
And he got fired.
Never to coach again.
Meanwhile, Jeff Fisher has 6 winning seasons, 6 playoff teams in 22 years and is still gainfully employed by the NFL...
Got to have top flight QB play eh?

6 winners out of 22 tries is indefensible.

Yeah, that's Jeff Fisher the conundrum, wrapped in a riddle. Just 6 winning seasons in 21 years. 9 losing seasons in 21 years. It certainly looks like 10 in 22 after this year. How does he keep coaching? Like somebody pointed out, Billick got fired after 9 years with 5 winning seasons and a Superbowl Trophy.

Billick made his name as the OC of Denny Green's Vikings for 5 years. Mostly on the performance of Randall Cunningham, Randy Moss, Chris Carter and Robert Smith in 1998 (15-1). He did well with name brand QBs near the end of their careers....Warren Moon, Randall Cunningham in Minnesota....and Steve McNair in Baltimore.

But back to Fisher....how does he keep a job? He's had a winning record 6 times, a losing record 9 times, finished .500 five times and in 21 years won less than 7 games four times. Maybe the lack of disastrous seasons keeps him around? I don't know but I gotta believe you don't remain a head coach for 22 years out of 23 by being an idiot or not 'having a clue'.
