The trouble is, top backup QBs need to be paid like it. The Rams knew full-well that they didn't have a top backup QB, and just hoped that Bennett and/or Rypien would not be needed. They already knew if it got to that, things wouldn't be good. And they're not. I don't think that's particularly surprising to the Rams.

actionjack wrote:I def think it was a priority to try and fix the backup QB with limited funds. The Rams didnt want to go a season with backup QB's who are limited in the throws they can make. The Rams drafted Stetson and picked up Ryp, with the hope that Stetson would grab the reigns to the backup QB position. Well Stetson had to go away and the Rams have had to lean on Ryp. While Ryp can at least make most throws, he isnt much good at anything else QB related.

Hopefully in this next draft they get a dude who can play behind Stafford for a year or so.

agree with both posts.. this draft is QB loaded (man, just one of those first two dudes would work) :D

Pretty sure the Rams spent a 4th round pick on Bennett expecting him to be the backup and i'm not sure they've given up on him just yet...

You don’t trade back in this draft.

You can get Stafford A lot of help and another super bowl run is possible.

Nice consolation prize.

Having the most unstoppable receiving core in pro football

cooper Kupp Marvin Harrison Jr. and Puka Nakua.

Shit at that point I’d take Justin Fields off of Chicago’s hands and trade him for a fourth rounder and let him learn under Stafford and Mcvay for two seasons at that point.

Caleb or Maye? How about Penix or McCarthy? I'd take either.

Hell, some might say, "that's the best kind of draft to trade back in". Caleb and Harrison should be gone in the top 3 picks, with a LT or Edge being the third guy off the board. With a little move down in the first, the Rams could end up with a 1st, 2nd and three 3rds (their own, from the trade down and for Morris getting a HC gig.....Saleh is keeping defensive head coaches relevant). How much could 5 picks in the first 90 selections help?

That list of bad teams, which correctly includes the Rams has 8 that will be interested in QBs.
Cards Bears Giants Rams Bucs Raiders Pats Falcons Vikings (Cousins injured and on his last year) all will be heavily researching for that slot.

Go Rams.

Whatever they do and where ever they pick, that have to have another stellar draft. They have to land 3+ immediate top flight starters at key positions (LT, corner, edge) if they really wanna make the leap to playoff/SB contender. If they go QB, then the 3+ rule still applies. It will just be more challenge to pull off.

Too early. They don't need "another stellar draft". They just need a solid draft. Stellar followed by solid would be a great 1 - 2. What they really need is the key positions of need accomplished via free agency. Then you have that "key position" for multiple years and you can always subsidize it via the draft. All and all, we've seen both angles played well by this regime and we need look no further than 5 winning seasons, 3 division titles, 2 conference titles and a Lombardi in 7 years. These guys know what they are doing but we ride them because they're not perfect.

I think they need both. Stellar or, really solid (top quality starters), AND, nail position of need in F/A. The latter more difficult as you are competing with other teams for a few marquis players. As long as they find studs at the need positions who can contribute immediately, the plan stays on course - regardless of where they get them.

Sidebar on Bryon Young. Per the Athletic...

Young is running away with the "best draft value" award in the class.
The 77th pick leads all rookies in defensive snaps, pressures, QB hits, sacks and forced fumbles.

Kobi Turner, Steve Avila , Puka, Ethan Evans all got highlighted in the article.
