Jets expressed interest in signing Brett Rypien before Rams elevated him from practice squad

The New York Jets are seemingly looking for a veteran quarterback to add to their roster following Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending injury, and they had their sights on Brett Rypien. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Jets expressed interest in signing Rypien before the Los Angeles Rams promoted him from their practice squad.

And do you feel comfortable with Rypien as the backup? Yeah, me neither. :shock2:

I'd bet there are less than 4 teams in the NFL who's fanbase is "comfortable" with their #2 QB starting. And I don't know who they are. :D Bottom line is this: If your #1 QB goes down, you're fucked. The days of Montana/Young or even Warner/Green or Bulger are long gone.

The thing with backups like Warner, Brady, Bulger, nobody knew they were any good before they played. It's not like going into 1999 Rams fans were feeling good about the backup situation, same with NE in 2000 and 2001.

I'm with PA, don't really care too much about the backup, i think running the scout team is as important as anything they do. If you have a SB caliber QB and he goes down, you're almost certainly done.

Then there are takes like this one:

Jake thinks having a 3rd string backup QB is essential. And since the emergency QB has to be on the 53, he seems to think carrying 3 on the 53 is also essential even though only 13 teams are doing it...

We can have a 3rd QB but on the PS,

Just like we did from the start of the season.

I don't see waisting a position for a 3rd QB on the 53.

I could definitely see that, though i suppose it depends on how long they think Bennett is gone for. But doesn't change emergency QB being a position player, which is fine.

Like i said, last count i saw was only 13 teams carrying 3 QBs on 53. Of all the stuff a team has to worry about, who your 3rd QB is on gameday is pretty low on the list...

Def should have a 3rd QB on the practice squad. We need that third guy to already know the offense, we dont want to wait until someone gets hurt.

If i'm counting right, Rams currently have 50 on the 53, they could carry 5 QBs and have them all on the 53...

Yeah they could,

But the RAMs are watching their bank,

because they are paying for at least four that are on the returnable IR candidates.

Three of them should be back by the fifth week,

Those three spots could count against the Inactive on game day,

so no reason to bring anyone in those spot at this time,

Unless its a player that needs to be on the 53,

like a trade or a viable FA vet, or plucking someone from another PS.

So if they fill like they need a 3rd QB,

They can filled it with a PS position.

A lot cheaper than putting them on the 53. IMO
