And as long as the cap keeps going up, these backloaded contracts make sense too. It's cheaper to sign a player today than it will be next year, etc. Yeah things get out of whack once in a while but for the most part it makes sense and everyone is making bank.

What happens if/when revenue levels out or starts falling? That will be interesting.

I'm pretty sure the Rams could have done some restructuring and kicked the can down the road if they wanted to. They didn't want to. I think they're pretty smart so i'm curious to see what's in store.

Who have the Rams jettisoned? I really liked Floyd a lot but he's hurt a lot, didn't have a great year and is getting older. Similar for Wagner. Jalen is a little different but again, not his best year, getting older.

I don't think this is a case of we ran out of money and simply have no choice. This is a choice, interested to see where it goes...

I agree with all you said, but i do wonder about when the cap doesnt go up and the fact that second contract QB's take such a huge portion of the cap. It is quite the dilemma.

Now back to the Rams plan, I agree the Rams probably could have re-structured contracts but most likely choose not too. It will be interesting see the full plan. Did they just feel they didnt have enough flexibility to really improve the roster to a championship level? I think that is part of it. I think Floyd is a decent loss, mostly because we have so little already, we dont even have an idea on depth. Ramsey wanted more money, I just dont think the Rams felt it was worth it at 29 years old. Wagner was luxury.

So will see what kind of defense the Rams can field after FA and the draft. Also can they upgrade the offense significantly? That seems to be the question....

Another thought that crosses my mind is Raheem came in midstream and took over Staley's defense. It's gonna be all his now. Not sure if that's good or bad but it is...

I am sure RM had Sean’s and Les’ ear when it comes to the defensive Forster and what scheme tweaks he wants to implement. He’s probably really excited actually about shaping this roster into his vision and personality. He has a star or rising star at all 3 levels. Sure, he lost stars or solid players on all 3 levels too. But, he gets to work with young, coachable guys with solid vets to help solidify and deliver his message and vision.

As long as MCV can build a powerful offense that can score 28+/game, this D will be just fine. Last year the goal was to keep opponents under 20. This season it will be under 28. I see that as highly possible if not probable.

Certain deals aside, the choice sounds risky. What they do with the money is the whole enchilada. We had a solid squad but slowly the contacts erroded it. Now we are newmads. I'm stoked to see what this turns into. Hoping it's as different as '17 felt after 4-12 '16.

Stafford is the big unknown. How healthy is he? Does he have more than a year or 2 left?

It's easy to say that McVay will draft his franchise QB next year. Seems to make sense to me.

That's why no one will be surprised if they move Stafford soon. He's not in McVay's long term plans and McVay has made the decision to stay through the rebuild.

I always viewed it as a 'carrot' that the GMs would put out there in front of the roster .. meaning .. we all know based on our contracts we cannot pay everyone their scheduled salaries. So whichever ones of you show you deserve it (or maybe even deserve more): go and get it if you want it.

"I kinda like Rams pivoting and going with cheap drafted players and maybe some vets after the first wave or two of free agency. Stafford's contract isnt terrible with respect to other established QB's, now the Rams just need to hit on these draft picks.."

BINGO. If done correctly and with some luck this approach will be more permanent. I love they got a chip but hate what it meant to '22 and forward. Besides a couple of personal letdowns I am on board with this strategy. But...it may take a while to get back to prominence.
