You can more easily find guards, centers, and ROTs after round 2.

That's not true of LOTs. Which is why 75% of the original designated starters at LOT in the league were 1st and 2nd rounders. From 2006 to 2015, only 6 of 122 drafted OTs picked from round 3 and after became starting LOTs. And so on. It's just a traditionally harder position to fill.

So what we're agreeing to disagree on is whether to use a 1st round pick on a left OT in 2018. 8-)

...

Fair enough. (And I still disagree with your "stats")
Going to be a wild draft with the potential for QB's being drafted ahead of #23

I like talking draft. And I really like not starting to talk about draft until mid January vs November like years past

That would be like 3 straight kicks to the nuts for me.
My 2 favorite prospects go at 21 & 22 and then the Rams go OG??
Have a hard time believing they'd pass up McGlinchey if he was sitting there

We might be surprised if enough QBs declare for the draft who will be there @ 23. Does anyone have a feel how many 1st round QBs will be in the 1st round.

At least 4 , but maybe as many as 6 depending on how things go at the combine, and pro day workouts (even though that's mostly a joke).

The Rams have 3 drafts ahead of them before Whitworth is gone unless injury and/or a desire to retire hits him prior to our schedule. My feeling is the Rams will entertain drafting some middle round picks and see whether one might stick as a replacement for Williams and have the potential for developing into Whitworth's heir to the throne. I've included one in my recent mock for just such a reason. If the necessity to replace Whitworth as early as 2019 should occur, McVay will have his first complete slate of all 7 regular draft picks for his first time as a HC, making it easier to trade up if necessary. If Whitworth remains healthy thru 2019, then we won't have to panic much prior to the 2020 season. Both of the 2018 & 2019 drafts are likely to invite a number of offensive linemen in as besides the Whitworth issue, Saffold, Havenstein & Jamon Brown will become eligible for free agency in 2019, and we don't yet know how well the potential Sullivan re-sign moves forward. I'd like to see us extend Saffold this off-season not only because he seems to be improving with age, but an extension most always comes with some first year CAP savings.
If we draft a LT this next pre-season, and I hope we do, he better be an improvement on Darrell Williams or we will have failed to improve our back-up situation and likely missed an early opportunity to find that developmental starter. We are fortunate in that Kromer is now working for the Rams, so hopefully a mid-round OT that can play as a swing OT/OG for a couple seasons is in our near future, ... if not, we should have another opportunity to accomplish this during the 2019 draft. jmo

Could see a player like Wynn be the 1st round pick after a trade down. Say the rams move down to 30 or so, Wynn is the highest player left on the board by a bit. That is a dilemma. Reach for a need, or take a better player that certainly help down the road. Tough to pass on taking the better player. Reaching rarely turns out well.

Not only 'enthusiastic', but wildly so ?

Really ? What did you see in Whitworth that has you feeling we should find his replacement today ? Admittedly, I saw some tiring towards the end of the season, but that can be managed by perhaps resting him for a game sometime before and after the BYE, but he played quite well and should be good to go in 2018. McVay let him rest one day each week while others were practicing, he did this for a few vets. I'm glad you exited the conversation after adding that you understand the need at other positions, as we surely do, so why is my post so 'wild' ?
We will take it one game at a time and one season at a time with Whitworth and others, and if all goes well we'll rely on McVay/Kromer/Snead to pick & choose what may be several new offensive linemen as necessity dictates. This thread was originally about replacing Darrell Williams, I believe my post shows how to do that while hoping the new guy can be developed into something better, and if not, we'll be better positioned next year to move up in the draft with all 7 of our regular draft picks. jmo.

He's 37 and LOTs are important. I don't see 3 years in him. More importantly, if the Rams don't see 3 years in him, then, they will draft a left OT sooner rather than later. The problem is, as all sorts of info amply demonstrates, you don;t have a very good chance of drafting a left OT unless you take one in rounds 1 or 2 (and even then there's no guarantee).

In 2018, though, it's not "today" it's for the future. There's no harm in that plus of course AFTER 2018 the following Rams OL are free agents: Saffold, Havenstein, Brown. If NOTHING ELSE you can use your 2018-drafted-OT at ROT for a year, if it comes to that. Or guard. Because there's no way on the face of the earth they will be able to re-sign all 3 of those guys, and that's assuming Whitworth is still playing.

And why not. Whitworth himself played guard his first few years in the league.
