Why does it bother you that Toyota decided to spend some of their advertising time with a spot like that?

Because its the equivalent of stolen (or, in this instance, purchased) valor. Toyota had nothing to do with the wonderful actions of the family that adopted the girl, or the triumphant actions of the girl herself. They just pay a fee to tack their name to the story, as if they somehow deserve credit.

Give me Mean Joe Green and a kid over that type of marketing any day of the week, and twice on (Super Bowl) Sunday.

I understand that point of view. But I really doubt it caused anybody to turn off the game.

Personally I’d rather watch something like that than the one billionth car commercial aired during a football game. I think we could use a little inspiration these days.

During the playoffs it seemed like every single break included an ad for the new Toyota Sienna van. I'm not exaggerating in that one game these playoffs had an ad for the van 4 straight breaks.

That or the GMC Christmas commercial for the couple that can drop $150,000 on a truck and an SUV without consulting each other.

I’m not triggered/bent because the Super Bowl one was different: but I’m not looking to be offended.

Oh, my silly little Loser. I'm not "triggered," "bent," or "offended." I am quite capable of expressing a preference or a critique without my heart rate or blood pressure rising one iota.

The NFL need not worry about me, of course. I've watched every Super Bowl for the last 40+ years (with the exception of the 2018 Eagles/Patriots game, as I was at an eco lodge in Belize with no TV or internet access). They're not going to lose me as a viewer regardless.

However, given the ratings numbers, if I'm the NFL (and companies paying a mint to advertise during the game), I'd be rethinking how the game is being packaged.

Did you not see the numbers posted on the previous page showing the decline in viewership among many sports? The NFL is doing far better than anyone else. You’re barking up the wrong tree.

Though there are reports that NHL 2021 regular season ratings are up, even over pre-pandemic 2019 levels. And we'll see what happens with the Masters back to April this year.

I guess NBC/Universal's contract doesn't have NFL rights like CBS/Paramount. The main Peacock page doesn't mention anything about football.

If the NFL is unconcerned about the decline and attributes it to extraneous factors, that's their decision.

I think there may be more to it. Time will tell.

When you consider how much worse it is for other sports, i'd think the NFL might conclude the opposite of what you're saying: They must be doing something right.

I always zone out during commercials and nowadays i look at Twitter on my phone.

But i know a lot of people are super interested in the SB commercials. Seems like another win for the NFL to me.

The real tell will be if networks keep paying out the nose for the NFL and, so far, there's no indication that's going to change...
