Great point everything used to be the Xtreme.

X games XFL tripple X with Vin Diesel.

The name sticks has an edge to it. I think the Rock putting his face on it brings a friendly face to it. Like ICE Cube with the Big 3.

Faces with built in fan bases that they trust that they want to be a part of it.

Genius Marketing. It’s the Rocks passion project. Because he was an XFL player a player on the fringe of NFL rosters never quite making it. So this outlet he’s trying to provide to players to get back on track.

What I like about this I do see players I recognize and know. Which makes for some better football Ken Ballage Josh Gordon Vic Beasley.

USFL sounds like a stale name to me. But that’s just me. Right now yes I’m Jonsing for Football and I enjoy betting on it.

Let's not forget the Memphis XFL 1.0 franchise: the Maniax

The first go round for the XFL, they were definitely playing up the Xtreme angle, pitting it against the No Fun League. Now they're a pretty conventional spring league trying be a sort of partner with the NFL which is probably smarter.

Will any spring league ever work? We're certainly seeing a lot of tries. The biggest problem continues to be there aren't enough QBs (and maybe Oline too), the defenses seem to be, just by the nature of things, structurally ahead of the offense and that's something they're gonna have to figure out.

I'm fully expecting the XFL 3.0 to last one season.

I don't think any spring league survives past that unless there a direct NFL connection. And it can't be in any NFL markets.

Props to the XFL and DC team for embracing the beer snake.

But at least they're setting a few groundrules down.

Yeah first installment was that whole basektball unnormal football the go run to the 50 yd line and pick up the ball. It was all theatrics T.V. The hot cheerleaders.

Didn’t they have some cheerleader shower stuff. I mean you couldn’t do any of that in the XFL. It would be cancel culture.

There are Quarterbacks who are boarderline practice squad. I thought for sure we would see Josh Rosen.

I think it has staying power. Next season you’ll see Trace Mcsorley.

And Josh Johnson

And Logan Woodside.

The Quarterback play is key. But there’s always going to be Quarterbacks trying to get back in the league. Vince Mcmahaon wanted the practice squad guys. I think the NFL finally gave them to the rock.

Back in 2001 we did a guys weekend down to Memphis to cheer a friend up who'd had a rough year getting dumped and losing his job. I don't remember a whole lot as we power drank most the day. There might have been 8000 people at the Liberty Bowl. And yes, the cheerleaders wore even less than normal. They also played to the crowd.

But seriously I guess they're just going for some sort of name recognition factor by resurrecting the XFL. If I remember correctly the MISL (Major Indoor Soccer League) name got used and resurrected like 5 times between 1979 and the early 2000s.

Plus there's the Dwayne Johnson to WWE and Vince McMahon connection so I guess that's why he dug up the XFL name.

See, what I appreciate about you is that you have a sense of humor :)
Agreed they must have been going for the name recognition, but even that feels weird .. the first iteration of XFL branded itself as, the NFL is too soft, we are going to encourage big hits, lean heavily into the sex & violence aspect of the game.

Today's XFL is less that and more so, the NFL is too distracted by wokeness and not focused on actual football, we are going to stand for the anthem, etc. (That was an early message at least, not sure they are leaning into that now). Not to mention, who doesn't think XFL and is not reminded of the massive failure of the first iteration? You'd think they'd want to scrub that?

The first spring pro football league to survive will be the one that accepts and embraces that it is a second tier league. I think we got there a few years ago with the more recent iterations, but it just hasn't worked out yet. Arena League survived as long as it did because of this. I remember watching an Iowa Barnstormers game thinking, there HAS to be someone on this field who can play in the NFL; extremely ironically, this was in 1997 ;).

The older USFL, XFL, maybe even WLAF had a pipe-dream fantasy of forcing a merger with the NFL and getting its owners a big payday. That was/is clearly not going to happen.
