OldSchool wrote:I've posted a few times that they don't run the same system and aren't a great fit. Also McVay has said he'll be calling the plays. Does anybody think that a veteran and successful coach like Norv would stand for that? Expect McVay to bring in a somewhat experienced OLine coach and groom him and Wes Phillips both for their futures by learning under him.

I was gonna say that, looks like you already have (many times). A seasoned OC isn't going to want the wunderkind calling all the plays (the fun stuff on Sundays). Doubtful that it's an experienced play-caller but, more likely, a guy looking to move into that role at some point ...

Meh, on McVay, totally out of the lack of experience, but very happy he appears to be open minded to doing what works on offense and not sticking to an antiquated philosophy of banging your head against a wall until the wall doesn't even want to do it anymore. I'm pretty sure he understands that the NFL is a... (wait, someone wake up Fisher and wipe his drooling chin...) "Passing League."

Fisher turned out to be a flipping idiot. Who knew? McVay will be fed to the machine for a couple of years and we can evaluate then. 6-10 would be nice the first year. Viva Los Improvements.

I'm cautiously optimistic. Our coaching hires lately have not been good. I'm excited about a guy who knows offense and understands the importance of scoring. But he's also an unknown. Linehan and Spags were unknown and we know how that turned out.

And Shanahan's offense looked pretty good last night. But I gotta wonder what he says or does not say in the interviews why he hasn't been picked up.

I just don't know anymore. We've gone the up and coming assistant route. We've gone the seasoned veteran route. We even went the college coach route in the 90's. Through all of that we struck lightning in a bottle for an all too brief period during the Vermeil/Martz years.

So I guess the last thing left is to go with a guy who was not on most people's radar. The youngest coach ever. Why not? We tried everything else.

I am behind him, and like the Phillips move. I think the offense will be improved and that alone with our d should help turn this around quickly. McVay has a huge learning curve but he appears to take advice well, and doesn't seem too egotistical that he wouldn't seek it.
That said, I did not come away from the presser with the same impression that many others have. I thought it was very scripted and he gave out too many cliché for my liking. Kind of reminded me of Herm Edwards in that regard. I know its the nature of the beast but I'd love to hear what he really has to say other than making sure he got all the buzz words out

Yeah, I kind of chuckled at the scripted thing. I think it was more a result of him being well prepared and have all of his talking points covered. It just came across that way in his rapid fire delivery. He's definitely not the smooth, calculated , deflecting, Fisher. He's quite the opposite. Which is refreshing. I don't care how it comes across even its slightly uncomfortable.

He has a quick rapid fire answer to every single question. And he's eager to address them.

Kind of just like what our Ram offense needs moving forwards. Hopefully his hyperactive traits are contagious. His brain seems to be going a thousand miles an hour and our offense has been stuck on stupid...See Rob Boras.

He is also going to be extremely motivated and have a chip on his shoulder coming in with something to prove. I'm not sure I had that sense anymore with Fisher.

The Faulk stuff sealed it for me.

The only question mark I have is that HC is a very different job than OC, and how is he going to wear the multiple hats when he has to shift his focus from the offense to overall team and organizational management.

Yeah, Norv Turner doesn't make a lot of sense.

He's a life long legend and disciple of the Coryell offense.

McVay is a Gruden WCO guy.

They wouldn't be speaking the same language...

I agree which is why the Wade Phillips move is so brilliant. It is going to take years for him to master the entirety of what being a HC entails. But with Wade at DC, he doesn't have to master all of it, right now. His strength is the offense side of the ball and in a couple years when he's developed his OC to take over play calling (a la Jay Gruden) he can take a more over seer position
In many ways the Rams are the perfect spot for the young HC as much as he is perfect for us

I don't get the Norv stuff at all.
The allure to McVay IS the offense. Why hire him to have him turn it over to a Norv Turner?
I'm excited for the "McVay" offense to kick in gear

A couple things. My concerns are about him bringing in experienced guys to fill the offensive assistant positions. We are not going to get a name OC because McVay is calling the plays. As others have stated, it will probably be Wes Phillips (his dad probably intimated that upon his own hiring) as OC. This teams needs an excellent and experience o-line coach worse than any other position now that HC has been filled. They also need a really good QB coach. So, I hope the kid hires the right vets for these positions.

Also, for those of us who frequented training camp, we will have a direct comparison come August between this current team, and the one that Snead/McVay build between now and then.

I am really looking forward to this...
