But Indrid, why so dismissive of John Wolford's talents? ;)

How much more mini can you get down from Brees?

I think they were talking more about his work ethic and smarts but clearly things were not good with McVay/Goff.

Also, if the Rams saw Wolford as comparable to Brees, why trade for Stafford?

"At first, absolutely," Goff said. "I think it builds that chip on your shoulder a little bit. I won't lie about that. There is that little extra motivation and chip that you do feel."
I wonder if guys realize when they say things like this, they're actually admitting that they weren't giving 100%? $174M wasn't enough motivation? NOW he's extra motivated?

This is how I see it,,,

If the RAMs FO doesn't fix the middle of our OL,,,,

It will be the exact same thing that happened last season....

The teams we had trouble with,,, teams that had strong, big and powerful DT that pushed the pocket...

If we fix the middle of our OL,,,, we will win a bunch of games and make the playoffs and make a run for the SB....

Stafford should help being behind the line but I too would love to see more quality beef up front. Alas, we may draft some new beef but me thinks the quality beef will happen in 2022..

Stafford has never helped with an OL. He is not different from any other qb if it comes to playing behind a broken or subpar OL. In 2020 for example the Lions qb was pressured at about the same rate as the Rams qbs, but Stafford got sacked more. He had a high sack percentage--6.7%.

It is true that in 2020 he had a good center and could step up in the pocket to make plays.

But if anything Goff has been better at avoiding sacks than Stafford.

Not only that, but Goff plays better against the blitz too. Goff's qb rating against the blitz is 101.0. I forget the exact number but Stafford's qb rating against the blitz in 2020 was in the 80s.

But I don't want to give the wrong impression. I like Stafford, and I like the idea of having a 13 year vet at qb. If nothing else, it is clear that McV did not have the patience to coach up a young qb, and Stafford obviously doesn't present that problem. Stafford was a starting qb in the NFL when McV was the WR coach for the Florida Huskers.

If the qb and the coach are going to be in a disconnect, then one solution is to get a qb the coach will listen to.

But at the same time, Stafford isn't an automatic solution to all the Rams issues. He no more makes up for poor OL performance than any other qb does.

Part of me wants to go into the 2021 season with the same O-Line as Goff had and see this magic our new QB will deliver. The other part of me thinks no way, we're gonna get creamed.

Goff will become a career backup.

It’s just a matter of time.

Our line isn't broken, its weaker in the middle. His ability to read a defense and move his feet helps him navigate better than his predecessor when the protection breaks down.
As I said I'd prefer better protection up front and center but I am sure he'll do better with what Goff couldn't. I'm pretty sure the game plan McV was forced to call helped that sack rate considerably.

And Stafford will not do any better than any other qb whose OL is weak in the middle.

Has nothing to do with reading defenses. Behind a better OL (that was stronger in the middle than the Rams 2020 OL) Stafford got sacked more.

It does not matter if you can read Ds if your line will not let you step up under a heavy rush.

Otherwise there's no point in the Rams investing so much in Donald. You can beat any qb by disrupting the middle. The Rams need Donald to do it to other teams. Other teams can do it to the Rams without Donald.
