Elvis wrote:We're now #3 in offensive ppg scored at 30.6. That's 9.2 more than last year and really pretty insane. We'll see how the 2nd half of the season goes.

what i find amazing is that the 30.6 average is pretty much exactly what the 2018 rams averaged with goff under center (30.4), in fact the 2018 rams averaged 30.5 offensive points per game through week 8... i say "amazing" because the 2021 rams have seemed like a more prolific scoring offense than the 2018 rams, maybe it's the new uniform effect! :D

rams offensive scoring thru week 8:
2021 - 29 tds, 14 field goals, 245 points, 30.6 average.
2018 - 28 tds, 16 field goals, 244 points, 30.5 average.

on defense the 2021 rams are doing much better than the 2018 rams - as you mentioned the 2021 rams are giving up an average of 19.8 offensive points per game for a 7th ranking, while the 2018 rams gave up an average of 23.5 per game for a 20th ranking.

the 2021 rams are loaded and look unstoppable on offense, and they are clearly a sb front-runner, all they have to do is top 2018!

Aeneas, do you have any numbers on yards per play? I can't find that stat on NFL.com or ESPN. And to the best of my ability I have the Rams in the high 6's though I've heard some say 6.5.

I took pass yds/rush yds and divided by rush atts + pass att + saxks.

thru week 8, yards per play:

2021 - 497 plays / 3,247 yards / 6.5 avg
2018 - 525 plays / 3,541 yards / 6.7 avg

i tend to use pro football reference for stats, so easy to navigate, altho they can take a bit longer to update their numbers vs other sites...

the 2000 offense was something very special, as in all-time nfl very special, unfortunately the 2000 team was also sabotaged by warner's health, turnovers galore, and the second worst rams defense since 1978 in terms of offensive points allowed.

through week 8:

After 12 games:

3rd in offensive points scored at 27.9 (8.5 more than last year).

5th in offensive points allowed at 20.0 per.

Now i know it's been a lot of all or nothing with this team and our offense has given away points while the defense hasn't taken away any back and that changes things but, pretty good numbers...

So I'm more surprised by the offensive points allowed ranking. One observation about that: When the defense is giving up 18-play, 10 minute drives to the opposing offense, it does tend to limit the number of possessions (and therefore, points) that we're giving up. I think that's a part of it.

From a particular point of view, that tends to justify the bend-don't-break defensive philosophy to some extent (however repulsive many of us believe that to be).

I find i'm a lot more inclined to come back to this after a good game.

After 14 weeks and 13 games:

Rams are now 2nd in offensive points scored at 28.1 per game compared to 21.4 last year.

The defense is now 7th in offensive points allowed at 20.2 per game compared to 17.9 last year.
