UCLA's Lonzo Ball shatters Bruins freshman assist record with selfless act
Ball gave it up when he could have thrown it down, and now he has more assists than any UCLA freshman

UCLA standout freshman Lonzo Ball dished it out when he could have thrown it down on Wednesday in what turned out to be his shining moment. In doing so, he shattered not only the UCLA freshman assist record for a single season, but also the Pac-12 freshman assist record:



A fitting moment for Ball, who is one of the team's most efficient scorers. An easy breakaway dunk was there for the taking, yet he found a trailing T.J. Leaf, who did the honors. He doesn't care who scores the most points. Or who gets the fame or the glory. As Gary Parrish noted when speaking with NBA scouts about Ball in late 2016, they love his rare unselfishness and passing ability. Both of those traits were on display in his seven-assist night.

Ball now has 183 assists and surpasses Pooh Richardson on the all-time UCLA freshman record book. Richardson had 179 in the 1985-86 season.

Ball might not be done re-writing the record books. With eight assists per game, he has a serious shot at tackling the UCLA single-season assists record. The current record, set by Larry Drew II in 2012-13, stands at 256. Should Ball continue on his current pace, he would likely come up shy -- right around 250. But 256 isn't completely out of reach by any stretch.

With a 95-79 victory against Washington State on Wednesday evening, the Bruins improved to 20-3. Ball, who averages 14.9 points and shoots 43.1 percent from the 3-point line for the top-ranked offense in the country, scored 14 points and added seven rebounds and seven assists.

He was matter of fact about turning pro after the loss to Kentucky. I hope his father doesn't Joe Jackson him or his brothers. There is love and support, IMO just needs a little less of the crazy!

A guy scores 90 and you only win by 20? How is it even possible to score 146 in a high school game? They must have agreed to not play defense, I read that Ball was not even required to pretend to play defense, that he mostly stayed on the offensive side of the court. I don't see how this kind of craziness is signed off on by the team and the school. Seems like an attempt to appease the dad and have his son stay at the school
