Steve Sarkisian apologizes for 'my behavior and my inappropriate language' at event

Kevin Gemmell, ESPN Staff Writer

USC head coach Steve Sarkisian has apologized for his behavior at Saturday night's Salute to Troy event, where according to sources he was intoxicated, used foul language and insulted other programs.

Sarkisian appeared to be drunk and was slurring his words, a team source told ESPN's Shelley Smith.

"Our whole team is embarrassed," said the source, who added that athletic director Pat Haden had to intervene and was seen berating Sarkisian backstage afterward.

The source said Sarkisian disparaged USC opponents, saying "they all suck" about a number of Pac-12 schools, and used inappropriate language while introducing his team to alumni and donors, as seen in video provided to ESPN by the team source.

"I sincerely apologize to my players and staff and to our fans for my behavior and my inappropriate language at our kickoff event Saturday night," Sarkisian said in a statement released via the school's sports blog Sunday morning. "I have a responsibility to all of them and I let them down. Pat Haden talked to me after the event about my actions and I assured him this will not happen again."

The Salute to Troy event is an annual rally to kick off the season and is attended by alumni and donors.

"I met with coach Sarkisian and I expressed my disappointment in the way he represented himself and the university at our Salute to Troy event," Haden said in the same released statement. "While the details of our conversation will remain between us, I am confident he heard my message loud and clear."

Sarkisian, a former USC assistant coach, is in his second year as the school's head coach after going 9-4 last season. USC is No. 10 in the preseason coaches' poll and was picked to win the conference in last month's preseason media poll.

ESPN's Shelley Smith contributed to this report.

Seven Win Sark is now 7&7 Sark?
Sauced Sark? Sloshed Stark?

Maybe he was offered the Rams OC job for 2016 and he started celebrating a bit too early? Shoot, I'd get excited too if I was promised access to some of Stan's Screaming Eagle wines.

Drink On!

I get the feeling this guy's got a real drinking problem. One more episode and he'll be gone.

Is alcohol normally allowed in the locker room of a college football team? Serious question. Most of the players are under 21.

Everyone is having a good laugh over that. Apparently it's never allowed in the players locker room but is now being banned for the coaches too...

Sarkisian to seek treatment after alcohol incident, won't drink in season

USC coach Steve Sarkisian addressed the media before practice on Tuesday, his first time meeting with reporters since apologizing for his "behavior" and "inappropriate language" at Saturday's "Salute to Troy" kickoff event.

Sarkisian told reporters that his unstable state was a result of mixing medication with "not a lot" of alchohol. Still, he made no excuses for his action.

"The way I acted was irresponsible," Sarkisian said. "There are things we're going to work on for me, moving forward."

Sarkisian plans to remain the coach at USC but said he will seek treatment during "a hard time" for him personally. He will also swear off alcohol for the rest of the season, and he confirmed that alcohol has been banned from the coaches locker room while clarifying that there was never alcohol in the players locker room.

"The leadership committee has been tremendous in support of who I am and what I'm about," Sarkisian said. "I think our team knows where I'm at. I'm thankful for that."

When asked about rehab, Sarkisian responded that he doesn't think that will be necessary.

USC opens the 2015 season against Arkansas State on Sept. 5.

I'm guessing he actually mixed "not a lot" of medication with plenty of alcohol.

And I love how he's swearing off of it just for the rest of the season. This guy's in trouble.

I hope they rally around Cutty and play the same mediocre football. . .

But seriously, it's the USC family -- they need to stick by him. Those evil, nasty boosters who want to cast him out, what up family?
It's not like Cutty hurt anyone but himself and, oh no, the image!! Cutty's not the one who lied about saving a drowning family member.
If they're so willing to cut ties so quickly, what's next? Selling out America and giving scholarships to Chinese Communists with money?!?

Stand by your guy, Trojans and. . .

DRINK ON!
