I was watching a show on Philadelphia with my wife the other night. They showed Shibe Park before it had grandstands from the left field line to centerfield and talked about the Philadelphia A's being World Champs 3 out of 4 seasons. My wife jokingly asked, 'were you ever there' and she was shocked when I said 'yes'.

I was there in the 60's when it was called Connie Mack Stadium and it brought back some memories. My dad had a friend who owned a bar and had Phillies season tickets on the third base line right behind the dugout about 15-20 rows up. He used to take us both and sometimes even give my dad the tickets to take my brothers and I.

I remember seeing a lot of good NL players of that era. Richie Allen. Bill White. Jim Bunning. Ernie Banks. Billy Williams. Roberto Clemente. As an aspiring kid who wanted to play ball, my dad was always teaching...or at least telling me to watch this guy or watch that guy. Two of my favorites were Billy Williams and Ernie Banks of the Cubs.

I would watch as they waited for the pitch, their fingers straightening out and then clutching the bat, over and over again, working them the entire time they were waiting for the pitch. My dad told me "see, they're not squeezing the bat. They're holding it firmly while keeping their hands relaxed at the same time. It's all in the wrists son". It was a good lesson.

And remembering those days got me thinking about those two. Banks hit 512 homers and Williams hit 426 most with the Cubs. So I looked up how many they had as teammates and I thought I'd find they were pretty high on the list. They are but they aren't top 5. They were in the Cubs lineup together for 11 years (1961-71) and hit 544 homers while teammates. So I started checking and found some very productive teammates. Some I suspected had a lot, others somewhat surprised me.

So what pair of teammates hit the most homers while teammates?

Johnny Bench and George Foster didn't play together very long, but it would be interesting to see their combined average per year, and how they rank next to the all-time greats.

Good call. Though I was thinking Tony Perez and Bench, it's pretty close.

From 1971 - 1981 Bench and Foster were teammates on the Reds. However, Foster played 36 games in the beginning of 1971 with the Giants and during that time (beginning of season through June 1st) Bench hit 14 homers. As Reds teammates they hit 504.

From 1967-1983 Perez and Bench were teammates on the Reds and they hit 517 homers, which would put them out of the top five behind the Cubs Ernie Banks/Billy Williams (562) #6.

Per year: Bench/Foster 45.8 , Bench/Perez 39.8 , Banks/Williams 50.9

In this thread I wasn't thinking of yearly averages (though that's a nice addition). I was thinking of total as teammates. So the longer guys are teammates, the more total homers together they are apt to have compiled. Surely you can think of some more power hitting teammates than Bench/Foster though I would suggest looking before free agency occurred in the mid 70's.

So far in my research I've got the Twins Harmon Killebrew and Tony Oliva (1962-74) as #5 with 635 homers as teammates. #4 is the Yankees Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra (1951-63) with 689 homers as teammates.

Okay, since nobody is playing I'll give you #3 and #2.

#3 Willie Mays / Willie McCovey: 765 homers (430 for Mays; 335 for McCovey) from 1959-72 before Mays was traded to the Mets in 1972.

#2 Babe Ruth / Lou Gehrig: 771 homers (424 for Ruth; 347 for Gehrig) from 1925-1934.

No, they don't count. Because they didn't cheat better!!! They had 456 between 1986 and 1992 (good enough for #11 on my list, though that can change because my research is fluid :D ). Canseco was gone after that.

In my top 5, none were teammates after 1974. In fact, in my top 8, only 1 pair played together past 1976....Junior and Edgar; 1989-1999
