Rams' Todd Gurley figures to be fine for Super Bowl

Is Todd Gurley hurt, or is he healthy?

After carrying the ball 256 times during the regular season, the Rams running back had just four carries in the NFC Championship game.

Gurley continues to say he was not injured but merely played poorly.

Now that Super Bowl week media availability is finished and there are no more interviews, we are unlikely to get any new information.

So what is the truth?

Gurley was dealing with left knee inflammation and was given the final two weeks of the regular season off. Combined with the first-round bye, he had nearly a month of rest.

He played well in the divisional round with 16 carries for 115 yards and a touchdown against the Cowboys.

Then came the two dropped passes and a total of five touches against the Saints. Anderson was on the field for most of that game while Gurley was on the sideline stretching and using the exercise bike. Gurley did score on a six-yard run.

Kudos to Gurley for not making any excuses. He had a built-in one that he has gone out of his way to debunk.

For what it’s worth, the Rams have been relatively forthcoming about injuries under head coach Sean McVay. And undoubtedly, the Patriots are going to prepare for a healthy Gurley and C.J. Anderson.

The real issue is what part of Gurley’s knee is inflamed. If this is related to his previous ACL on the same left knee, that heightens the worry.

My suspicion, based on video review, is he has tendonitis, perhaps of the patella tendon. Video did not show a play with traumatic injury. And his frequent trips to the exercise bike and use of heat would support the tendonitis analysis. If it was structural, wear and tear or related to his ACL, he likely would not take those courses of action.

Patella tendonitis is something he will play through, and I expect a performance closer to the division round than championship game.

My expectation is that he will have a good game.

More specifically, I'm betting he'll have an impact both running the ball and as a receiver. I would not be surprised to see him with 5-6 receptions (or more) on Sunday.

Wondering if TG will have micro surgery on that knee in the off season-that
will answer that question.

Are you referring to micro-fracture surgery? I've not read or heard anything that would suggest he needs anything that drastic.

I'd guess that, if he needs anything, it would be a simple arthroscopic procedure to remove scar tissue.

I can see Gurley having surgery right after the Super Bowl to get that repaired and rehab before camp starts next season....

I was thinking meniscus from all the pounding that joint has taken over the years. And, you get inflammation from that but not usually swelling. I don't know if TG had swelling in the knee? And inflammation does not automatically mean swelling.

Anderson was on the field for most of that game while Gurley was on the sideline stretching and using the exercise bike.

This has already been debunked.

Anderson 37 snaps 54%
Gurley 32 snaps 46%

GAMEBOOK

I just wished the word would get around to the writers. Gurley is going to be a big part of this game...#MonsterGame

I fell into that trap too. It's because the broadcast kept showing TG on the sideline. Aeneas already went over the entire 3rd qtr snap count. And TG palyed a HUGE role in blitz pick up.

also, he looked awesome on his 6yd TD run.

I think he is champing at the bit to have a huge game. I hope both he and CJ have monster games with 4 TDs between them, and Goff hitting Everett for a TD. GZ with 2 FGs. Goff with 2 Td's. TG with 1 rushing, 1 receiving and CJ with 2 rushing.

I expect to be fine as well. No complications. Getting some extra practice cheering for when we score, and maybe think of a few words to come up with for the refs, when they make a bad call against us, and plus, my pitch for the booing I'm going to give to the Cheatriots. All this without straining my throat.
