Tyrann Mathieu calls out 49ers' 'simplified' passing game

By Eric Edholm

The Arizona Cardinals didn't strain hard to crack the San Francisco 49ers' offensive code.

What gave it away? The 47-7 final score in Week 3? Colin Kaepernick's four interceptions, including back-to-back pick-sixes to open the game? The 156 yards and 10 first downs the Niners mustered?

According to Cardinals defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, the Niners have made things so vanilla it was easy to dissect their passing game.

This is damning for Kaepernick, the 49ers, offensive coordinator Geep Chryst and head coach Jim Tomsula. True: Some teams get overly complicated in this league, and it is — as they say — as much about the Jimmy's and Joe's than it is the X's and O's.

To a point, that is.

If it's so simple that a third-year defensive back is openly calling out a division rival's scheme, something isn't right. The 49ers got the season off to a rousing start with the Week 1 win over the Minnesota Vikings, who have won their past two games. But the Niners have lost their past two since then and have been quite hot and cold offensively thus far this season, with Sunday's display completely the latter.

Two years ago, Rams said they were tipping their plays? Now this? At least we haven't heard this type of stuff about Cig . . . yet.

So, what did Warner do for Kraep's game?

I give CK credit for trying but one can't be taught to see and to process. Warner can tell him what to look for but he can't see it for him. Nor can Warner teach anticipation. No one can.

I can understand why guys like CK and RGIII want to improve their games but at this stage, you have to dance with who brung ya. Both of them were real terrors for defenses when they were using their legs to run and to open the passing game. Not really sure why they'd go away from that.

I'm going with snarky. Other than a D that shows up most of the time, what have we got? We can't crack 8 wins. We end up in the cellar most every year. Now we look to be moving the franchise...again. Our home attendance will blow this year. I get the feeling there is a general malaise in the league regarding the RAMS. Maybe not SOSAR, given our D can shorten careers in a second, but I don't think the RAMS are on anyone's radar once the season gets going. Jimmy "the Greek" would say we lack the intangibles...and an offense...and probably a coach.
