NFL could move only one team to L.A., indefinitely

AP
It’s been presumed that two teams will return to Los Angeles. The only question is which of the two teams that once were in L.A. will go back.

The question may have changed in recent weeks.

Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, the NFL may ultimately move only one team to Los Angeles. And that would happen not as a short-term thing, but as an indefinite move that could result in a second team never going to Los Angeles.

The shift comes from the league’s intense desire to get it right in L.A. Although it would be a lot easier to build a stadium with private money if 20 games per year are played there, instantly assigning two teams to a market that for 20 years has had none may not be the best way to reconnect with Los Angeles.

If only one team goes, that team likely would be the Rams, since owner Stan Kroenke already has plans in place to fund privately a one-team stadium in Inglewood. The proposed project in Carson hinges on two teams: the Chargers and the Raiders.

A one-team market in L.A. likely would hinge on working something out for the Chargers in San Diego, which may not be easy to do without public money. It could be even harder if the Chargers are dead-set on leaving — and if owner Dean Spanos has the votes to block Kroenke from moving to L.A. alone.

Meanwhile, Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times reports that the L.A. relocation process soon will shift from league-office personnel to a key group of owners and Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The so-called Committee on Los Angeles Opportunities (they need a clunkier name for it, I think) consists of Steelers owner Art Rooney II, Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, Texans owner Bob McNair, and Giants co-owner John Mara. Ultimately, 24 owners will have to agree with whatever this group recommends, but there’s currently no reason to suspect a rebellion.

Unless the recommendation is that the Rams will get L.A., the Chargers will stay in San Diego, and the Raiders will continue to float aimlessly. At that point, Spanos and Raiders owner Mark Davis could cobble together nine votes aimed at blocking the move, which could eventually force Kroenke to move in violation of the league’s relocation policy — perhaps setting the stage for another high-profile NFL loss in a court of law.

This is exactly what I think will happen. I hope Stan doesn't need to go to court, but I think he will if necessary, and he will win.

It makes no sense to move 2 teams to LA. Spanos needs to quit whining and work with San Diego. Davis needs to take whatever he can get - maybe St. Louis or San Antonio.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Stan say he's building a stadium for TWO teams in Inglewood?

How is it the owner with no money to build a stadium of his own has the power to block an owner that does? What does Spanos have that Kroenke does not that influences other owners to his will?

You are correct. The plans I saw had 2 sets of home boxes, 2 sets of owners suites and 3 locker rooms. That keeps LA leverage alive and offers a place to Deano to go if SD falls on it's face in all of this. F Davis.

To your 2nd question, I have to guess the old money talks and bullshit walks. Still I keep hearing that Spanos is adored by the other owners. Why I could not tell you. But that is the only reason ever given. I personally hope that little fucker goes down in flames. 25% of LA my ass.

Sucker better not try to stop our cities team from returning...

Dropping 2 teams in LA simultaneously is dangerous risk. They can't fuck up LA again. If they adore Spanos so much and want to help him then put your money where your mouth is. Give the little fucker most of the relocation money to help build a stadium in SD and give him 2-3 Super Bowls.

The NFL should help him by not letting hi shoot himself in the foot by becoming the 2nd chair in LA to Raiders or Rams while losing half of your current customers in San Diego.
Preposterous.

If the Raiders are on of the teams, it's a failure already. Nobody with a clue in LA wants those clowns back.

I don't believe the "Spanos is loved by the owners" BS... so NFL could still do a deal that supports the Chargers plans even though it doesn't make sense. That entire line sounds like PR created to keep everyone guessing... and bidding.

They know Stans plan is without a doubt the best and most likely they will approve the move. I think they're trying to play hardball with Stan and squeeze more money out of the man. They know he's all in and he's filthy rich so they taking advantage of that. But Stan is no fool. He's a successful business man and this is his game. This isn't his first rodeo.
