EARTH CITY, Mo. -- The St. Louis Rams voted for and announced their 2015 team captains Wednesday, a group that mixes incumbents and new additions to their leadership.
Rams players vote on the captains with the idea of finding a representative from all three phases of the game. But according to coach Jeff Fisher, there were a couple of close calls so the Rams went with five this year.
On offense, quarterback Nick Foles won the vote with linebacker James Laurinaitis and end Robert Quinn representing the defense. Punter Johnny Hekker and linebacker Daren Bates won on behalf of special teams.
"I had two really tight races on defense and special teams, so rather than have a re-count or go out and have a run-off, I've named two on each side," Fisher said.
Laurinaitis and Hekker were captains in 2014 and remain in those roles this year. The other three are new to the spots after end Chris Long and quarterback Shaun Hill held those jobs last year.
While it's pretty common to see quarterbacks named captains, Fisher said seeing Foles chosen by his teammates so quickly is a testament to how he's been accepted since arriving in March.
"The first day he stepped in the building, that's his personality," Fisher said. "So, he captured everybody's attention, which is good. When he talks, they listen and they look, they turn to him, so I was really happy for him."
For his part, Foles said he was excited for the opportunity.
"It's a great honor to be a captain of the team," Foles said. "Being voted on by the guys is very humbling. Since I've gotten here, they've welcomed me with open arms and helped me along. It's really an honor to be here and play with these guys, so I'm excited about what we have here."
