Todd Gurley welcomes new Rams Coach Sean McVay with open arms

Gary Klein

Rams running back Todd Gurley had not heard the news.

Then he got a text from quarterback Jared Goff.

“You’re going to like him,” Goff wrote.

“What are you talking about?’’ Gurley responded.

“We just got a new coach,” Goff wrote.

Gurley said Friday that after learning that Sean McVay had been hired by the Rams, he reached out Thursday by phone to congratulate him.

“He seemed like a pretty energetic coach, and he has a good plan for us,” Gurley said in a phone interview.

The running back is coming off a frustrating season.

The 2015 NFL offensive rookie of the year rushed for only 885 yards and six touchdowns in 16 games, a struggle after gaining 1,106 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns the previous season.

So he welcomes McVay, who as the Washington Redskins’ offensive coordinator directed the NFL’s third-best offense this season.

Gurley said that he has followed the development of Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins and that Redskins running back Keith Marshall, a former Georgia teammate, also spoke highly of McVay.

“He said, ‘You’re going to love him,’ ” Gurley said.

I hope McVay comes in just like TJ McDonald asked for...demanding accountability and success. It's apparent he can coach a QB, let's hope McVay has some coaching savant with O-linemen and WRs!

Gurley better spend the off season working on his game. He bears responsibility for his below average performance this season. It is not all on coaching, play calling, or the o -line. Just go watch his runs and see how many times he makes bad reads, is impatient, and gets tackled too easily.

Agreed. The offense didn't set him up for much success but he did look as if he was mailing it in much of the time. You could see in the 22's that he missed a lot of holes.
I still think that shedding those pounds hurt his game. Eat your Wheaties TGII.

Agree on the weight.Gurley just did not seem to be motivated.I am sure he was frustrated with the blocking, but I also believe he was frustrated with the scheme.
They completely got away from some of the things we had great success with the year before.(the ball action stuff with Tavon)I know he wanted to be more involved in the passing game, and I agree. Gurley showed very good hands in college.Bottom line
is,I don't think he ever bought in to the BS Boras was shoveling.
I think he let the frustration take him over.I hope it's just a maturity thing that
he will outgrow.Maybe he should watch some tape of Steven Jackson and how
he responded to 8 and 9 man fronts with poor blocking.SJ just took it out on
the poor souls that had to tackle him.

Here's hoping McVay and company can get Gurleys head back on track.

yeah, im going with dick84's take, that tg wasn't 100% this year, watching the backs attack the los this preseason has been a real eye opener... of course running into nothing but a brick wall between the tackles, again and again and again, may have also cooled tg's jets in 2016...
