How do we get Gurley Going...?

Even with the occasional big plays, I still see teams regularly stack 8 to 9 in the box to stop Gurley. What the heck do we have to do to get Gurley going geez...

I know it's unfair and probably wrong, but the few times i've seen Gurley in space, he's looked slow to me...

Yeah it's been an easy mark to just assume that he's facing stacked box. I'm pretty sure he did last year also and still had some monster games

I'm not expert in this, so I don't know how much of it is the line and how much is Gurley. There are times when I see him hit a wall and it seemed like there was something better to the right or left of where he went. So is he not letting things flow naturally for him?

Then again, it sure seems like he's always getting hit in the backfield. Hard to get going with that happening all the time. Teams are committing to stopping him even if it means the Rams get some deep plays. So far its helping Keenum.

Most teams run to pass. Los Ramos has to pass to run.

I think the passing game opening up will help keep defenses honest. Also, I just don't see the creases. Yeah, teams stacked the box last year, but the O line made some holes for him. This year, I just don't see the holes.

I've only seen one play from yesterday that I thought he could have bounced outside to the right in the red zone later on in the game for a bigger gain. However, I don't think the broadcast put a replay on so I couldn't see from Gurley's perspective what he was seeing.

Aside from that, I just see defenders in our backfield ALL THE FREAKING time every time we hand off the ball...

I suggest the Rams try getting him involved in the passing game. It should give him more space to create plays. It's been tough because they're opting to go with Benny Cunningham on 3rd downs, and the Rams are running in predictable run situations so defenses put 8 or 9 in the box. With that many defenders, the O-line is getting beat at the line of scrimmage. Many times we're seeing 2, sometimes 3, in the backfield!

Last season in 13 games, Gurley had 21 receptions for 188 yards (9.0 YPR). Through the first 3 games this year, he only had 3 catches for 9 yards. Yesterday, he had 5 for 49. Of course most of that was due to Cunningham injuring his hamstring, but we want to see Gurley utilize his talents and speed to create game-changing plays.

But what do we know, right? Rams are 3-1! :D

First Keenum needs to recognize 8-9 man box at the LoS and check out of run into a pass every time.

On passing downs like 2nd and long. When we get 6 man boxes.
Run the ball.

Major issue:

Stop tipping run direction by formation. Defenses are keying on our upback or TE in motion to the strongside. We run to this side about 99% of the time.

Its impossible to block, by being outmanned and defenses slanted to the direction we are running the ball.

Some options.

Start using Harkey as a FB. Even Benny as a FB.

Start Running Counters. I really want this option. Start getting defenses to overpersue and use Gurley backside. Pretty much need a FB for this.

Spread the line of scrimmage.. Wider Stances for OL Run the ball from more spread formations.

Do we have a RB toss in the playbook?

Consider scrapping the ZBS.

Never ever throw another screen pass again.
