(CNN)Former NFL star and longtime sportscaster Frank Gifford died Sunday of natural causes in his Connecticut home, his family said.

Gifford, who was married to talk show host Kathie Lee Gifford, was 84.

"It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and friend, Frank Gifford," the Gifford family said in a statement.

"We rejoice in the extraordinary life he was privileged to live, and we feel grateful and blessed to have been loved by such an amazing human being. We ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time and we thank you for your prayers."

Gifford, Cosell, Meredith.

All gone.

Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end.

MNF had it all...Football, halftime highlights of more football, great theme music (the music before Hank Williams Jr. came along and screwed up), Frank, Dandy Don and Howard...wow, that was an era in my life I will never forget. I can still hear Howard doing the halftime highlights with the cool music in the background. My Dad and I watching MNF...damn good times.

Reminds me of the "Odd Couple" episode with Howard Cosell. Great stuff.

"Turn out the lights, the party's over".

I still remember Howard Cosell being the voice that told me John Lennon was 'dead on arrival".

Listen to a younger Frank Gifford in the clip.
