The St. Louis Cardinals are among the most valuable sports teams in the world, according to a new ranking published by Forbes Wednesday.

Forbes valued the Cardinals at $1.4 billion, the sixth most valuable Major League Baseball franchise. The Cardinals were not on the list last year.

The St. Louis Rams, meanwhile, have dropped from the top 50 ranking. Last year, the Rams were valued at $875 million by Forbes, good enough for No. 45 on the list.

The Rams were one of 12 NFL teams not to appear in the top 50 list. The minimum valuation for the list was $1.15 billion. Forbes’ most recent profile for the Rams had the team valued at $930 million.

The Rams, if located in Los Angeles — a very real possibility given Rams owner Stan Kroenke’s stadium plans there — would be even more valuable.
In a new stadium, the St. Louis Rams (in St. Louis) would be valued at $1.5 billion, said John Vrooman, a Vanderbilt University economics professor and expert on sports economics.

That’s compared with a Los Angeles-based Rams franchise that would be worth an estimated $2.1 billion, if not more, Vrooman said.
The Los Angeles Lakers ($2.6 billion) and the Los Angeles Dodgers ($2.4 billion) also made the top 10.

European soccer team Real Madrid was the most valuable team in the world, valued at $3.26 billion. Kroenke’s Arsenal soccer club was the 36th most valuable sports franchise, worth $1.31 billion.

The world’s 50 most valuable sports teams are now worth $1.75 billion on average, up 31 percent from 2014.
