Rams agree to three-year deal with Coty Sensabaugh

Nick Wagoner

The Los Angeles Rams have agreed to a three-year contract with cornerback Coty Sensabaugh, a source told ESPN.

The deal is worth just shy of $15 million and can be worth up to $19 million if he reaches incentives.

Sensabaugh, who started 15 games for the Tennessee Titans last season, will be counted on to help fill the void at the cornerback spot created when Janoris Jenkins signed a long-term contract with the New York Giants last week.

The Rams also will have cornerback E.J. Gaines returning from injury next season. Gaines missed the entire 2015 season after suffering a Lisfranc injury in training camp.

Cornerback Trumaine Johnson received the Rams' franchise tag on March 1. He signed the tender worth $13.952 million on March 9.

It is expected that Sensabaugh will compete with Gaines for the outside cornerback spot opposite Johnson.

Sensabaugh, 27, played for current Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams when he was Tennessee's senior assistant defensive coach in 2013. If he doesn't win the competition with Gaines, Sensabaugh has the flexibility to play nickel as he did under Williams in Tennessee.

He had been on a two-day visit with the Rams before agreeing to his contract. He also had interest from the Dolphins, Giants, Seahawks and Bears.

Sensabaugh played 59 games in his first four seasons with the Titans, including 27 starts. Best suited to be the Titans' nickelback, he was forced into increased action in 2015 when a sports hernia injury limited Jason McCourty to only four games.

He made the first two interceptions of his career in 2015, including a pick of Jameis Winston he returned for a touchdown in a season-opening blowout of the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay.

Sensabaugh was originally a fourth-round pick out of Clemson in 2012.

So he replaces Joyner at nickel and Joyner replaces McL at FS.

I agree. I was thinking the same thing.

I often read the comments on player move articles on PFT to see what the fans of the team the player is leaving have to say. They watch them every game and often have the best assessments. An example is some fans being surprised at the Rams releasing JL while most Rams fans saw it as a declining player rightfully being let go.

Anyway, one of the comments on this move came from a Titans fan who said, and I'll paraphrase: if I could pick one player to remove off our roster it would be that guy. He was awful.

FWIW

Well that's a ringing endorsement. :? Let's hope Titan fan was wrong about him.

Here's another oneTitan fan:

On Coty, I feel like he has a bad rap because we asked him to be a #2 this season and that's not what he is. I think he is a quality #3/4.

Depth is good, but somehow I doubt that Tru or EJ are going to feel to threatened.

Ok i have read enough of the Titans forums.... overwhelming sentiment is that we completely screwed the pooch on this one. I was really hoping we were going to go after Sean Smith. The Raiders beat us to the punch.

Baron was underperforming till he got to the Rams and GW knows Coty from Tennessee. So i imagine he knows how plans to use him.

Or maybe he won't make the team...

It's like bashing your ex. Makes the separation much easier to convince yourself that they were horrible and you are better off without them. One man's trash is another man's treasure.
