Quarterback Ball Velocity at NFL Combine

Ourlads’ Guide to the NFL Draft is the only source that gives the number for the quarterback’s velocity at the NFL Combine. Velocity is measured by a radar gun in miles per hour.

Interesting post Hacksaw. You don't have to be the top of the list but over 55 appears to be the bench mark.

I wish there was a little more about how this study was conducted. What I do like is its empirical nature of the radar gun for the test. In the end, no matter what you do you just can't fool it. Obviously its not the be all end all analytic. But I do like it.

Big Giant Red Flag = Connor Cook

The Chad Pennington arm comparisons may be for real.....

Both Goff and Lynch have a higher number than I would have thought....

Austin Davis threw it 58 so there are some outliers there.
But I don't see a guy under 55 that ever did anything in the NFL

I think the only one I see is Tyrod Taylor. From what games I have watched of Buffalo, he didn't look to have too bad an arm...

I dunno about this . . . I don't think any of us think that radar-gun-combine-arm is the same thing as game arm.

Some pundits say that Joe Flacco has the best deep ball in the game. There's some connection between throwing hard and throwing long. Luckily, the one copy of Ourlads that I have, has Joe Flacco. Ourlads gun on Flacco said:
Ball velocity was 55 mph.

Two other gun results are noteworthy, not for the speed, but for the Ourlads' commentary.
For Brian Brohm:
Ball velocity in the 53 mph range which is good.

For Chad Henne:
Ball velocity 53 mph which is good.

Fast forward to more recent readings, Brandon Bridge was a QB I was looking at based on some scouting reports, like these:
Three-quarter thrower with elite arm strength and instant release. Has enough arm to make off-balance intermediate and deep throws that few (if any) in this draft can make.

He can throw it through a wall, but who knows if he can throw it right to me standing 15 yards away.

His arm strength is pure NFL, but his lack of functional accuracy simply cannot be overlooked.

I watched game vids and yeah, guy seemed to have an arm, a scatter arm, but still an arm. But Ourlads has him throwing only at 57? Same as Mannion and less than Davis?

I'm just not sure that these speed gun numbers have any real use. True you can't fool the gun, but you can change some habits: like was Austin (and others) throwing harder at the combine knowing that there were critics of his arm strength? Were others babying their throws, trying to show touch, for their critics? Was Mike Brito manning the gun?

To me, these numbers need to be taken with . . .

Can't say he's done much yet either
