Mike Mayock says "illegal tampering" goes on every year at the scouting combine

By: Miguel Melendez | 1 minute ago

It might have been a casual drop on live television, but NFL Network’s Mike Mayock revealed what the rest of the NFL probably already knew.

During the defensive back’s 40-yard dash portion at the scouting combine Monday on NFL Network, the cameras panned to San Francisco 49ers coach Chip Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke. The pair were sitting together, prompting Mayock to brush on the 49ers’ quarterback situation involving Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert. It then led to this exchange between Rich Eisen, Deion Sanders and Mayock.

Sanders: What are they gonna do there?

Eisen: That’s a great question. What is going on there? I mean, that seems to be the perfect fit. … Or is the way it all went down last year just like so much bad blood with the man sitting next to him he just wants out?

Mayock: You gotta have all the “illegal” tampering that goes on here at the combine every year, is really kind of overlooked and part of what happens prior to free agency. But this guy’s under contract. Kaepernick’s under contract. You would think he fits what Chip does. But if the agent is out there unofficially looking for a new team for Colin Kaepernick to present to San Francisco, then obviously his client’s really not happy with what’s going on in that building for the last couple of years. So, I don’t think any of us know the true story at this time.

Sanders: What’s the financial ramifications? That normally tells you what the true story is.

What if the Rams traded for Colin Kaepernick?

Mayock went on to explain what our Chris Biderman broke down extremely well over at NinersWire. If Kaepernick is on the roster on April 1, his $11.9 million in base salary becomes guaranteed.

The announcing team then shifted on a defensive back’s personal story before circling back to Kaepernick.

Mayock: Folks, we don’t really know what’s going on. We’re looking around trying to piece together different dots. I guess what I’m trying to say is the kid is not happy with what’s going on in that building.

Kaepernick’s shown signs that he’s lost trust in the 49ers organization. He sought a second opinion outside of team doctors and had surgery outside of team doctors. And now word is he wants out.

While not exactly earth shattering news, Mayock might have let the cat out of the bag by the mere mention of illegal tampering on the league’s official network. Mayock is one of the greatest football minds. His calming voice and incredible insight is a real pleasure to listen to in the run up to the NFL draft.

This tidbit, however, might be one he’d like to have back.

If they run 5 step drop, some read option and scrap the WCO, then yes. He would be awesome. But the 3 step, dink and dunk that Fisher likes would nullify all his strengths and expose all his weakness
Just like San Fran

Makes you wonder how Smith lost the job to him. Not saying Smith is a superstar but he can read defenses and is incredibly mobile. Wish the Rams had him.

They were a different offense under Harbaugh though. Harb's let him do his thing and was successful, he leaves and Kaep stinks again.

So then why not just make the tampering legal? It doesn't deter or affect much.
