Report: Eagles up offer to Sam Bradford

Posted by Josh Alper on February 28, 2016, 12:51 PM EST

While speaking to the media at the Combine in Indianapolis last week, Eagles executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman reiterated that the Eagles want to have quarterback Sam Bradford back with the team in 2016 and that negotiations to make that happen are ongoing.

They also reportedly increased their bid for Bradford’s services. Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that the Eagles put a bigger deal on the table during this week’s talks with Bradford, who will become a free agent March 9 if he doesn’t sign a deal or receive a franchise/transition tag from the Eagles.

There are no numbers in the report nor any indication of how much of a jump the latest offer might be over previous ones, but Garafolo reports it is “at the top of his expected range on the open market” and that it is part of a “strong push” ahead of the start of free agency and the two-day “legal tampering” window that allows players to talk to other teams that immediately precedes it.

If Bradford responds to that push, the Eagles should be re-signing another current member of the team in an offseason that’s already seen plenty of that in Philadelphia.

Sources: Eagles have upped offer in strong bid to keep Bradford

By Mike Garafolo @mikegarafolo

Feb 28, 2016 at 11:55a ET

The Eagles upped their offer to Sam Bradford during meetings with Bradford's agent at the NFL Scouting Combine last week as a way of making a strong push to close out a multi-year deal for the quarterback before the start of free agency, sources told FOX Sports.

The terms of the offer aren't available, but sources indicated the Eagles believe it's a very strong offer for Bradford -- one that's at the top of his expected range on the open market and one that should help get him under contract before that market opens on March 9.

Though former Eagles coach Chip Kelly is the one who brought Bradford to Philly, sources have repeatedly said Howie Roseman likes what he saw from Bradford last year, as do Doug Pederson and his offensive coaching staff.

The Eagles have a few backup plans if they can't get Bradford under contract. One of them is Chiefs quarterback Chase Daniel, whom Pederson coached in Kansas City. During his press conference at the Combine, Pederson pumped up Daniel as both a backup and a potential starter if given the chance. Even if the Eagles re-sign Bradford, Daniel could be an option as a free agent to serve as a backup to Bradford.

Former Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, whom Roseman drafted, could soon be on the outs with the Rams. Foles is due a $6 million guaranteed roster bonus and a non-guaranteed salary of $1.75 million. Rams coach Jeff Fisher already made it clear Foles won't be the team's starting quarterback this season. It won't take much compensation from another team to pry Foles from the Rams, especially if the club picks up a portion of the guaranteed money owed to Foles.

Mark Sanchez remains on the Eagles' roster as well. He's set to earn $4.5 million this upcoming season.

Bradford is coming off a season that produced mixed results. He had career highs in completion rate (65 percent) and yards per attempt (7.0) as well as a solid stretch run in which he threw for 1,061 yards over his last three games. But Bradford had only 19 touchdowns and some uneven play as he worked his way back from two torn ACLs.

Pederson said last week he understands that, as a former player, "you have to want to be somewhere and I think Sam wants to be in Philadelphia." The Eagles have made it clear with their latest offer they want Bradford there, too.

Now, it's just a matter of seeing if the sides can close it all out.

York: I think Kap can be a big piece of what we're doing

San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York still thinks Colin Kaepernick can be a big part of the team moving forward.

"All I can tell you is that the last conversation I had with Kap was a good conversation," York recnetly told The San Jose Mercury News. "I asked how he was feeling. I hope he's doing well. I care about his health and well-being because I think he can be a big piece of what we're doing, going forward."

York's comments come amid reports from NFL Media's Rand Getlin that Kaepernick's agents have requested a trade. Per NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the Texans and Browns could both have some interest if that were to be the case.

But at this point, we -- like York -- are still wondering if that is going to happen.

Presumably, Kaepernick would fit nicely into a system run by new head coach Chip Kelly. A built-in run option is so much more effective when a quarterback has the ability to run. Also, it's important to note that just because an agent has requested a trade, it does not mean anything will happen -- it simply means that representatives paid by the player, who have that player's best interests in mind, want one.

So where does this all leave us?

York's quote is nebulous enough, but earlier in the week general manager Trent Baalke said that Kaepernick would be on the roster April 1. He also added that he has no idea where reports have been coming from. It would seem that York is echoing that sentiment even if he's an arm's length removed.

Kaepernick will have some competition on the market should the 49ers decide to open it up for a trade. Robert Griffin III and Brock Osweiler could also draw interest from quarterback-needy teams. The Jets might allow Ryan Fitzpatrick to assess his value. If the 49ers do not see something better and more affordable out there, or in the draft, all of this panic will be for naught.

I don't even read these things anymore. If the Eagles are advertising that they upped their offer, Bradford is more gone than he was before and the Eagles are just trying to save face when they have to start Sanchez or whatever.

There is still a long way to go before April 28th. Free agency is going to clear up a lot of the information on which teams need QB's. If Bradford was to sign with the Browns things will get real interesting to see how far the top 2 QB's drop in the draft.

Updated 2016 NFL Draft Order
ORDER TEAM REGULAR-SEASON RECORD
1. Tennessee Titans 3-13 (No QB need with Mariota)
2. Cleveland Browns 3-13 (Need QB but might pick one up in FA)
3. San Diego Chargers 4-12 (No QB need with Rivers)
4. Dallas Cowboys 4-12 (No QB need with Romo and plenty of talent on the board at #4)
5. Jacksonville Jaguars 5-11 (No QB need with Bortles)
6. Baltimore Ravens 5-11 (No QB need with Flacco)
7. San Francisco 49ers 5-11 (No QB need if Kaepernick stays)
8. Miami Dolphins 6-10 (No QB need with Tannehill)
9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 6-10 (No QB need with Winston)
10. New York Giants 6-10 (No QB need with Manning)
11. Chicago Bears 6-10 (No QB need with Cutler)
12. New Orleans Saints 7-9 (No QB need with Brees)
13. Philadelphia Eagles 7-9 (QB need but could keep Bradford or sign Danniels)
14. Oakland Raiders 7-9 (No QB need with Carr)
15. Los Angeles Rams 7-9

If Bradford or another QB gets picked up by the Browns then one of the top 2 QB's (Wentz/Goff) could fall all the way to #15. A long way to go and lots of things can happen between now and the draft.

Determining what 1 through 14 needs and who might be available (mock) is a clearer indicator but your list shows it could happen.

2,4 & 7 are my concerns. But any of them could draft for the future if they don't have more pressing needs. Fortunately most team do.

Updated 2016 NFL Draft Order
ORDER TEAM REGULAR-SEASON RECORD
1. Tennessee Titans 3-13 (No QB need with Mariota)Agree
2. Cleveland Browns 3-13 (Need QB but might pick one up in FA)Agree
3. San Diego Chargers 4-12 (No QB need with Rivers)Disagree. If a top QB is sitting there, I think there's a chance the Chargers take him. Rivers isn't young and hasn't ever won anything.
4. Dallas Cowboys 4-12 (No QB need with Romo and plenty of talent on the board at #4)Disagree. Romo's old and is having surgery again. Cowboys would certainly consider a top prospect.
5. Jacksonville Jaguars 5-11 (No QB need with Bortles)Agree
6. Baltimore Ravens 5-11 (No QB need with Flacco)Agree
7. San Francisco 49ers 5-11 (No QB need if Kaepernick stays)Disagree. I don't think there's any certainty there. Kelly hasn't given a vote of confidence and CK has publicly requested a trade.
8. Miami Dolphins 6-10 (No QB need with Tannehill)Disagree. Not so sure about Tannehill either. For one, there's a new coach. Second, that coach has been given a 3 year ultimatum. One would think he'd want "his" guy at QB.
9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 6-10 (No QB need with Winston)Agree.
10. New York Giants 6-10 (No QB need with Manning)Wouldn't think so but Eli's never played for anyone but Coughlin. Plus, he isn't getting any younger. Giants may plan for the future if one of the top guys falls.
11. Chicago Bears 6-10 (No QB need with Cutler)How long are they going to stick with Cutler?
12. New Orleans Saints 7-9 (No QB need with Brees)Brees is getting way up there in age. Can't dismiss the idea of the Saints drafting his successor.
13. Philadelphia Eagles 7-9 (QB need but could keep Bradford or sign Danniels)I get the feeling Daniels will be their guy in 2016 but at best, will be a bridge(a lot like Pederson was when they drafted McNabb).
14. Oakland Raiders 7-9 (No QB need with Carr)Agree
15. Los Angeles Rams 7-9

If Bradford or another QB gets picked up by the Browns then one of the top 2 QB's (Wentz/Goff) could fall all the way to #15. A long way to go and lots of things can happen between now and the draft.
I think there's going to be a LOT of movement and there's no way to tell what will be there for the Rams.
