It's time to start rewarding right tackles, plus more free agency notes
February 27, 2016 6:04 pm ET

INDIANAPOLIS -- One of these days right tackles are going to start getting the money they deserve. Many get out-compensated by elite guards and tackles, and they generally make half of top left tackles (those guys get in the mid-teens in millions per year, while right tackles top out around $8 million). Seems a little off to me.

Most teams will get their best pass rusher -- J.J. Watt, Khalil Mack, etc. -- lined up against the right tackle as much as possible. Sure, he gets some help, but how many tight ends are true tight ends in the blocking game these days? Teams are throwing the ball more than ever, and depending on which way a quarterback rolls out, the blind side could become the right side.

With most defenses predicated on having bookend pass rushers, right tackles bear a pretty heavy responsibility. At some point, do some of them start getting north of $10 million, especially as the salary cap is set to keep jumping?

Does a rebuilding team with more cap space than it could ever spend -- Cleveland, Jacksonville, Oakland -- lead the charge, if not this year than soon? Mitchell Schwartz of the Browns could be an interesting test case on this year's market. At some point you would think more of the wealth might trickle over to the right side.

Speaking of top-notch offensive linemen, Kalechi Osemele continues to be the guy on the offensive line I hear is most poised to break the bank on the open market. He can play guard or tackle, and any team with cap space and need is sniffing around on him. That's a large market in this era with most teams starved for offensive linemen. I bet he gets strong tackle money despite being primarily a guard to this point of his career.

More free agency notes

Jets: I continue to have every expectation that the Jets and Ryan Fitzpatrick work out a deal to keep him as their quarterback. Things moving along well enough, he very much wants to be there and he isn't going to be out to break the bank at the end of the day. His teammates badly want him back. It'll get done.

Quarterbacks: There's been very little free agent quarterback buzz at this combine. The Redskins have always had to franchise Kirk Cousins. Sam Bradford is not generating much heat, and teams seem to generally expect Brock Osweiler and Fitzpatrick to be back where they were and not changing addresses.

Bruce Irvin: Look for the Falcons and Jaguars to be among the suitors for pass rusher Bruce Irvin. Again, so many need edge rushers.
