Charlie Casserly says "Rams should trade two No. 1s for Kirk Cousins

By: Miguel Melendez | 24 hours ago

The Rams are in need of a quarterback but they’re certainly not desperate.

With more than $50 million in salary cap space, a No. 15 pick in the NFL draft and two second-round picks as well, the Rams are primed to make a splash. Keeping that in mind, the Rams need to take a methodical approach — not a bold one — when it comes to their next quarterback.

Former GM Charlie Casserly, however, writes that the Rams need to do something big now that they’re in L.A.

The Rams have a playoff-caliber defense and a Pro Bowl RB, but they desperately need a QB. Season-ticket applications are flying in right now, but that will not last if they don’t win. Mediocrity will not sell in L.A. They need to get a QB, perhaps in a bold, aggressive move like trading two No. 1s for Kirk Cousins if the Redskins franchise him.

First off, no. You don’t trade away your future for a quarterback that could potentially get eaten alive in L.A.

Kirk Cousins is a smart quarterback, and when given the opportunity he shined. He proved as much in Washington. He sees the field well and can hang in the pocket. But he simply wouldn’t be a good fit for the Rams. Cousins isn’t mobile or as athletic as he’d need to be to avoid the constant pressure he’ll be facing in L.A.. The Rams are still rebuilding the offensive line, and adding Rob Havenstein is a solid start but it’s not quite enough to recruit a pocket passer.

Second of all, there’s one thing L.A. fans hate more than losing teams and that’s teams making head scratching moves (i.e. the Lakers). So, why pull a Washington-esque move and give up value for an otherwise unproven commodity? Cousins has one full season as a starter under his belt. That body of work isn’t enough to give away one first-round pick, much less two.

The Rams are off to a strong start in 2016. They made a good-business decision in releasing three declining players to make salary cap room and have enough picks in the NFL draft to make sound decisions or leverage them for something better. The Rams need to build on this momentum and take a methodical approach — not a desperate one — when it comes to their next quarterback.

Casserly is nuts.

But Kirk Cousins is a perfect example of why it probably doesn't matter who our QB is.

Jay Gruden is a former OC who knows how to coach offense and QB's. He helped develop Kirk Cousins.

Why would Kirk Cousins be any different than Nick Foles on the Rams?

Two #1's is way too steep for a QB that has only really had one good year. I think there is still a lot of uncertainty regarding Cousins. Had a heckuva year but it feels like there's another shoe waiting to drop.
