The only surprise is the "discount" he is giving up as alluded to by McVay. It's not much unless it's compared to the other offers he received.

His cap hit is $47.4M this year. It's a one year deal by structure but his dead cap will be huge spread over 4 years which must be the "discount" McVay as alluding to. His dead cap would be spread over 4 years with most being paid in 2026 (almost $42M). They can spread the cap hit by declaring it a Post June 1 transaction. 2027 would be $27.4M with the rest spread over the next 3 years.

Matt will get almost $90M for one year. That is a huge price for a guy who projects to miss games. I'm not denying Stafford's talent but all that for a guy that isn't what he was in 2021? Although it's structured with multiple year's it's no different than his original what has now been replaced. Next year is shown as another "option" year. There is no illusion that they can afford this again next year. Anything less than winning a second Lombardi would be failure. It's why I expect them to try to carryover as much cap to next year to help pay for the dead cap next year. Or they will struggle to extend key players from 2023.

There is no question they will be drafting a QB next year. The only question would be who. I think Arch will stay in school through 2026 to give him a chance to be the undisputed #1 pick in 2027 with two complete seasons on his resume. IMO Nico Iamaleava is going to be in the top QBs of next year's draft. I think he could be their target.

Nico just transferred to UCLA so that he could play in front of his friends and family as he's from Long Beach. I also think it was his agent's suggestion to make sure he gets exposure with the Rams and their fans. There is a lot to like about him.

According to over the cap, the extension is 2 years 80M with 40M guaranteed. Cash payout this season is 44M.

He will be the 15th highest paid QB this season. Seems like a bargain to me.

Spotrac has it slightly different, will be interesting to see which is right:

Matthew Stafford signed a 2 year, $84,000,000 contract with the Los Angeles Rams, including $80,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $42,000,000. In 2025, Stafford will earn a base salary of $16,000,000, a roster bonus of $4,000,000 and a signing bonus of $24,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $47,466,666 and a dead cap value of $112,333,334.

If it's $80 mil guaranteed, that's a 2 year deal. Added 4 void years and a dead cap of $65 mil in 2026 which again says 2 year deal to me.

But we don't know which numbers are right yet...

Considering Giants were supposedly willing to pay him$55 mil per year, this is quite the home town discount. And we now know, if Stafford is on roster at beginning of FA next year, another $40 mil is guaranteed...

The bottom line is this. The folks who have been clamouring for a "new QB".....of the future....have alluded to the possibility Stafford will be done after THIS year. It sure doesn't sound like it.....according to McVay. So since he talks to Stafford more than I do....or more than any of those other folks who've been clamouring.....I'll take him at his word. Stafford will be around for 2 or 3 more years. There is no need to worry about 4 years of dead money because he'll be under center in 2026 and probably 2027. There is no need to worry about the draft and finding the next QB. But it won't stop those who have been clamouring all along, despite being waaaaay off base.

An aside, I found it interesting listening to NFLRadio this afternoon, people are saying the Rams will be SB contenders for the next 3 or 4 years. Why? Stafford is at least top 3 in the NFC (if not #1) and top 10 in the NFL. The Rams have HIT in the draft the last few years. McVay is a top 5 (at least) head coach in this league. So all those kvetching about a new QB or dead money or whatever they want to worry about can RELAX and ENJOY the ride. Or not.

And btw, 44 million is a huge discount.....compared to the other top QBs in the league; compared to 'other offers' Stafford may have received (I didn't see any of that released in the press); compared to whatever. 44 mil for a guy with his talent and resume is a HUGE discount.

I agree with all that. But next year is a good year to take a qb in round 1 anyway. Let him sit in the mold of Jordan Love/Aaron Rodgers. What makes me nervous about a young qb is that basically, McV has not shown he can patiently develop one (he started to with Goff and then some wheels came off). Well, I am assuming a couple of years sitting behind Stafford could do wonders for a young qb.
