With Shelton, this was the starting OL during the 2023 season.

Just what I can remember as far as my memory, not going back to review tapes,

The only problem we had with Shelton, is when we faced really strong DT or NT.

It's an interesting signing. Obviously the center position is important for the OL. Last off season, few were concerned about losing Shelton. We were happy to have Avila, re-signed Dotson and grabbed Jonah Jackson. Limmer beats out JJ so that signing was a bust, probably saying more about JJ than Limmer. So Shelton returns and it's said, "they're not giving up on Limmer". Of course not, he was a young rookie but the money suggests Shelton is the #1.

Ram centers under McVay:

Sullivan
Blythe
Allen (SB)
Shelton
Limmer
Shelton (again?)

I don't think we've ever been overwhelmed by their choices. Maybe Limmer is the guy or eventually will be the guy. Maybe Shelton will stick around. Maybe we'll be looking for another center in 2026. At least we've got past not drafting what's-his-name. 8-) Haven't we?

Snead expects center Coleman Shelton, who signed a two-year deal in free agency this spring, will be the starter again. Shelton previously started for the Rams in part of 2022 and all of 2023, though spent 2024 with the Chicago Bears.

Rookie sixth-round center Beaux Limmer took on the role in 2024 after injuries shuffled the group. Snead complimented Limmer’s efforts, but pointed to a need for improving communication across the line especially in crucial moments (such as the last two plays of the divisional round last season in Philadelphia).

“That ability to communicate to all of our young OL and maybe even our veterans, maybe in an audible situation, maybe when things change and being able to handle that in the moment, it was very vital,” said Snead, who added that Limmer can also play guard and will keep developing.

Always fun when the sensible thing is the right answer...

And Shelton has likely gotten bigger/stronger, has two really good and strong guards on either side of him, and Limmer has proven he can actually be. A starter. He just needs to also get bigger and stronger and to develop his recognition and communications skills. I think we are better at center than we have been in a while. They don’t have to be an All Pro. They just have to function within the system and the starting 5 at a high level.

I hope Limmer doesn't get trashed too heavily for his costly rookie mistake. He still had a very solid rookie year. As for Coleman, unless he has bulked up quite a bit, he doesn't match up well vs. stud NT. Remember, Da Bears felt their interior line was weak this year and cut him lose. Between Coleman and Limmer, it also means we now have quality depth at all three interior line spots. I'm usually pretty optimistic but I want to see a better version of Coleman this time around. I DO realize his experience making line calls is why he is back.
