Backup QB?

Now that Stafford is locked up for at least this year, the Rams need to make sure they have a backup plan for a game or two.

The Rams learned a valuable lesson in 2023. They had Brett Rypien start a game that he tanked in. Upgrade needed so they signed Garoppolo as insurance in 2024.

I think they need to do the same this offseason. There are several experienced QB'S available this offseason and the Rams should grab one.

Taking the obvious off the board (Rodgers, Darnold, Fields and others) there're some QB's on the table. Garoppolo seems to be the best option based on system fit but he's still a FA.

I like Daniel Jones as a possibility. He's not a rookie and could come cheap learning under McVay.

Just a thought but interested in hearing other's opinions on the importance of backup QB and options available.

Jag would be the safest play. I could live with getting a look at D Jones though.

Wish we could get Hendon Hooker from Detroit.

Ha. Jag. A slip. JG is clearly what I meant. Although…:

Gotta think it's Jimmy G., unless another team want to pay him/give him a chance to start.

You also gotta wonder what the point of Stetson is...

Stetson hasn't proved he's worth keeping IMO. Last pre-season he was simply a JAG. IMO Stetson will be fighting to remain relevant as a long term #2 in the same way as Wolford was.

There are FA who have shown at least they can compete at this level if they want another JAG type backup.

But I think they will draft a QB. In what round will be determined by the structure of Stafford's contract and the player they take. Take him at 26 and they can play Stafford for 2 yrs if they are so inclined and still control his contract for 3 more years. Those two years would be insuring he's ready to start. I'm inclined to believe that is their perspective. If Matt's contract is basically one year then that first round guy will be expected to be their backup for this year and start next year.

They have two assistant coaches with backgrounds in QB development. That IMO is not a coincidence. When you look at Matt's original contract they built in 2 option years, i.e. 2025 and 2026. I see them doing likewise. If the rookie looks ready to play next year then he will start. If not they will have a second year to develop him behind Stafford. All things being equal I think they will expect the rookie to start in 2026 but having Matt on an option year gives them insurance.

Either way they should draft a QB this year and that rookie will be #2QB this year and possibly in 2026. The Rams need to stop kicking the can down the road and it should begin this year. One thing that should be noted. McVay said in an interview recently,he regrets how he treated Goff and accepted the blame for a lot of it. He said he has grown from that experience professionally (hence Van Pelt and Ragone on the team).

I think this delay in the formality of Stafford's contract is part due to the NFL and part to determine McVay's contract status beyond 2026. I think it will have a bearing on who they take at QB and when. No matter what having Van Pelt and Ragone on the staff will insure continuity in the long term development of the rookie QB.

If the Rams are "in it to win it" next season, I don't see them drafting a QB at 26. That would not upgrade the roster for a Super Bowl run in 26.

Completely agree. I'd say there's zero chance of that except it's the Rams so, higher than zero...

BTW, McVay said he absolutely wants Jimmy G. back but realized he might have other opportunities.

He also said he wants Stafford to be a Ram as long as Stafford wants to play but McVay is thinking about the future at QB too...
