Big deal. If the money works out, he's still a championship caliber franchise QB. We'll need a successor plan before long, but there's time for that.

I'd take that "issue" over the rest of the West.

49ers - Brock Purdy is a good young QB. Good... not great. He lacks elite qualities and skills that would allow him to carry his team. But, with one more year on his Mr. Irrelevant rookie deal, the 49ers are going to have to make a choice: overpay him or start from scratch. My money... or, should I say, a lot of their money... is on overpay. It's a decision they can't avoid that (coupled with other free agent and aging vet issues) could hinder them for several years.

Cardinals - Arizona has already hitched their wagon to Kyler Murray. Is it me, or is the only consistent thing about Murray his penchant for late season diminishing returns? This year, he had a passer rating below 81 in 5 of the last 7 games (all losses). He's exciting, and sometimes looks great, but he just doesn't seem to sustain play for 18 weeks. But, Arizona has no options... they're stuck with him for at least a couple more years.

Seahawks - Seattle may be in the worst position. Geno Smith is talented, but extremely inconsistent. They are stuck with him for 2025, in all likelihood, as they lack the draft capital (18th pick in the draft) and the money (estimated $27M OVER the cap) to replace him. In fact, with that cap issue, they probably will lose some of his weapons.

So... we have a contract to work out. Not so bad.

Yep we have a top 5-10 QB, he just has to want to play. I say no skill erosion at all in Stafford and he is as competitive still as they come.

You were spot on with your assessments of the others. I do want the Rams to look at the future at the position in this years draft.

Its all on Stafford. He has to want to keep playing. If I was a betting man I'd put money on him sticking around. Why quit when you're still one of the best? He's probably Hall of Fame material. But not first ballot. If he sticks around a couple more years and wins a championship I'd say he'll be first ballot.

The 49ers are in Cowboys territory. The quarterback is not elite but he'll have to be paid like he is. Which handcuffs their ability to build around him. Which is something he needs. He can't carry a team like the Allens, Jacksons and Mahomes of the league. And their core is aging with a lot of money owed to them. 49ers are stuck but if they let him walk after the season they'll end up in the dreaded quarterback purgatory situation.

Murray and Smith are not upper tier quarterbacks. Murray has flashes but can't sustain it. Smith is mid tier. Those teams are gonna be chasing the Rams as long as Stafford plays a couple more years.

Let's face reality. Aging is all about diminishing returns. Stafford isn't the QB he was in 2021. We aren't talking mentally, this is a very sharp mind inside a battered body. I like the guy and that is why I'm concerned. I've seen what football at that level does physically to a guy. You simply have to look at the percentage of these athletes who pass at early ages. I'm sure that is what will eventually determine his decisions. Right now he is physically able to enjoy the rest of his life with his wife and family and he's earned it.

God knows I would be the last person to criticize if he decides to retire. I'd say thank you Matt for 4 glorious years and a Championship. God also knows Matt has the money to live out his days in comfort and he's provided for his girls as well. He almost lost Kelly and something like that will haunt them still. Matt achieved his goal of coming to LA. I don't care what anyone says, he's a lock for a HOF berth. His career achievements rank up there with the best all time.

It's also clear that he isn't able to be the type of QB McVay wants to move forward with his offensive evolution. They moved on from Goff for exactly that reason. Unlike Jared, Matt has nothing to prove to anyone. A media position is ready and waiting for him. Better money, better hours and time to spend with his family.

Put me in the group saying this team will change with or without Stafford. They know what they need to get over the final hump. Just like in 2021 when they made a huge move to bring Stafford to LA. What I've been trying to point out in my last few posts is that this offense was QB centric. But look at what it has become compared to back then. This team would win a SB with a good not necessarily elite QB. As Les pointed out repeatedly in his interview, it's about having one point more than the opposition when the game ends. I.E. even a QB like Purdy with a good arm, reasonable athleticism, and the ability to make good reads is really all they need. Purdy is a good QB but not elite per se.

This very young defense got them into the playoffs. That is undeniable. The offense simply failed to play complementary football. You don't need a superstar QB like Stafford to be successful in this iteration of McVay's scheme. They need a bridge QB for a year if they draft one. I think that is what they told Stafford and does he want to be a part of that transition? That is why I don't think it's a given he will be back. But they need an answer sooner than later so they can lock down their bridge QB ASAP, and I believe it will be Garoppolo as he already knows the offense and team. He's the logical choice.

Will Howard is extremely accurate. Look at how Accurate he was on that throw to Jermiah Smith in the national championship against Notre Dame. He was so clutch at that point Ohio State needed a big play and he made the big play on the third down. The big throw on third down. That’s accuracy.
