Not to take anything away from Stafford, McVay, the Rams, et al. My best friend, a beyond die hard Lions/Stafford fan. We’ve gone to Lions/Rams game together, he’s watched the Rams win SBs while the Lions wasted away in purgatory. We both loved the trade and I still do. I thought Goff would be here 10 years. Goff found a coach that BELIEVED in HIM. McVay found a QB that believed in himself. Sometimes it’s just that simple.

Umm McVay lost confidence in Goff. his lack of improvement and turnovers finally broke the camels back. In Stafford, McVay found an equal from a football knowledge standpoint. They could each push each other and hold each other accountable.

Goff got much needed time to figure it out with the Lions, whereas the Rams were in win NOW mode, simple as that.

Goff is a fine quarterback. Always has been. He's had some good years. And years not as good. Give him a solid supporting cast and he can look elite. But until he leads his team to the Superbowl he probably won't be considered among the top quarterbacks.

Look back at 2021. The final 3 postseason games. Stafford made clutch throw after clutch throw. A 55 yard bomb to Kupp to set up the game winning field goal. Bringing them back from a ten point 4th quarter deficit the following week. And leading them on a game winning drive in the Superbowl. Would Goff accomplish all that? I don't think so.

Can’t argue with that. Win-Win but I want to win every year! Rams are having a great year

Is Lamar considered among the Top QBs? Has he even played in a SB.

Goff is a top QB. It happened in Detroit. Could it have happened here? Maybe. But we would likely still be looking for a Super Bowl win. Stafford has a chance at at least one more SB. Goff has a shot at his first. They are both top 15, probably top 10 QBs right now. Goff will likely get more shots with a top quality team than Stafford will.

Either way, the trade worked out for all parties as far as I can tell.

Can’t stand Detroit. But I would pull for Goff if the Rams are out.

They both do a lot with a good system and talent around them. The difference is guys like Lamar and Allen can do more with less. Goff can't.

If you're saying Goff wouldn't have been able to complete those same bombs, on those same exact plays, that Stafford did -- then maybe not.

Certainly, Goff offenses look a little different than Stafford offenses.

But have you watched the Lions this season? Goff has made a LOT of spectacular throws this year. The Lions' offense clicks because of Jared Goff.

Goff made great throws with the Rams, too. Still the same guy. Plays with a bit more confidence than he did with the Rams. Success will do that.

I have a tough time comparing these two quarterbacks because I like them both, and they're different from each other. I'll take Stafford all day long, but Goff will still be slinging long after Stafford has retired, no matter how many years Matthew keeps playing.

We saw the 2024 version of Goff at times in 2018. The Minnesota game he was throwing dimes, way downfield. The KC Mexico City game that was moved to L.A. was the same. He's always had that ability but he's much more consistent with it in 2023-24. Why? Doh! Experience.

McVay wanted a QB1 he didn't have to coach up, i.e. develop. With Stafford he has a plug n play QB. So McVay made the conditions to justify moving on from Goff by saying he needed to read defenses but refused to give him time to do so by keeping him in the huddle until the last 15 seconds then blaming Goff when the defense changed during that last 15 seconds. Or didn't people notice that?

Has he ever done that with Stafford? In Detroit, he's been correctly developed and Ben has designed an offense to play to Goff's strengths something Sean refused to do. That is why it worked for both sides. It's why even though drafting a QB1 in the next draft is a no brainer, it probably won't happen. With Jimmy G. he has a vet that knows his offense and he doesn't have to develop. That is why I'd be surprised if they let Jimmy walk or they don't trade for a vet QB. That is the flaw in McVay's character that Snead must deal with.

Don't get me wrong I love McVay as a HC. But I'm not blind to his idiosyncracies either. Goff has proved exactly how good he is if he's with a coach that believes in him and structures the offense to play to his strengths. That is not the kind of coach Sean is. He has his offense and wants and needs a QB he can plug n play and do so at a high level.

Jimmy G showed enough IMO to prove he can be an effective starter if allowed to be. That game against Seattle was impressive for who Jimmy didn't have yet he came within 5 points of a good Seattle team with all starters. IMO that is what Sean will take away from it.

For as much as McVay has evolved personally, I still think he's unchanged at his core and how he sees the QB position. The only change is Sean wants a QB1 that can do things that Stafford can't. It's why I expect Jimmy G or Darnold next year because Sean did it once with Goff/Stafford I think he will do it again.
