and the kayfabe continues...
hard to interpret the move to a Citizen's Initiative as anything other than a
diss to Mission Valley and a press towards Downtown San Diego (despite Spanos
basically saying otherwise). And I'm less sure than ever what Fabiani's role now is.

The Chargers and city officials met Monday afternoon, shortly before the team announced
a significant addition to its effort to get a stadium built in San Diego.

In a move that seems to at least portend good intentions, the Chargers have hired to
head their stadium efforts the man they wanted the city to hire to do the same thing
more than a year ago.

The Chargers on Monday announced that Fred Maas will join the team in its quest to
launch a citizens initiative toward a November ballot measure aimed at getting public
assistance building a new stadium.

"(Maas) has been around San Diego a long time," Chargers chairman Dean Spanos said on
a video posted to the team's web site. "… He's very familiar with all the political
aspects of what goes on in the city, how all that works. His knowledge of San Diego
as whole will help us."

Maas was expected to be present at a Monday afternoon meeting between the sides at
Spanos’ home. That meeting included Mayor Kevin Faulconer.

Special counsel Mark Fabiani, whose aggressive style has angered fans and local
leaders, continues to work for the Chargers and will be involved in the stadium process.
But, as had been expected, Fabiani's role has been altered. Where Fabiani has headed
the team's efforts in San Diego and Los Angeles since 2002, Spanos said Maas "is in
charge of this particular initiative, this stadium effort going forward."

Chargers sources have said the team plans to spend approximately $10 million on the
election process, which begins with the launch of citizens initiative. Others familiar
with the cost if such efforts said that cost is reasonable to assume.

Maas was the stadium point man in former mayor Jerry Sanders administration, as well
as the former director of the Centre City Development Corp. and a businessman with
extensive ties in the community. He moves in circles occupied by both Chargers chairman
Dean Spanos and Faulconer.

In fact, the Chargers suggested to Faulconer that he consider Maas to head the city’s
side of stadium negotiations in 2014.

After meetings with Faulconer, Maas withdrew from consideration citing concerns about
the commitment he would have to make considering all the new mayor was working through.
He later expressed his respect for Faulconer and others involved in the process.

It was around that time in late ‘14 that many people close to Spanos began to indicate
he had essentially given up on getting a stadium deal in San Diego.

The Chargers said in a statement that Maas “will advise Spanos and the Chargers on the
Citizen’s Initiative process, including the exploration of possible stadium financing
plans that would be publicly acceptable, the drafting of the initiative document, and
the creation of the campaign infrastructure necessary to give the Citizens’ Initiative
the best possible chance of success. Maas will be working closely with an established
team of legal, financial and land-use advisors.”

Given his work downtown, some interpret that Maas' inclusion in the Chargers' efforts
confirms that the team will pursue a downtown stadium. Spanos said that is not
necessarily the case.

"That’s why I brought Fred on," Spanos said. "I want somebody who is going to look at
both sites. We have to look at it from a financial perspective and what are the chances
the public is going to support one of these projects and give us the best chance to
get a stadium."

Granted I just browsed this while eating leftovers but this looks promising for keeping them in San Diego. Just read that Davis was talking about the Raiders to Sacremento too I'll see if I can find that again.

This it Old School?

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS13) – The Oakland Raiders’ fate is still up in the air after they gave the NFL gave the option to the Chargers and Rams to move to Los Angeles.

No one is publicly talking about wooing the Raiders at this time, but what about privately?

Raiders owner Mark Davis says he has talked about a Sacramento Raiders stadium, but beyond that he won’t offer specifics.

“It’s just, it’s been talked about,” Davis said. “I’m interested in finding the Raiders a home.”

At a red carpet exchange with reporters, Davis said he’s in negotiations now to extend a temporary lease at the Oakland Coliseum for next season.

He’s hopeful for something more permanent.

“Tomorrow’s another day, and you never know what can happen,” Davis said.

We asked what about Sacramento appeals to him.

“Well they just built a new arena, they’re building one, and Kevin Johnson’s a heck of a guy,” Davis said. “I get along very well with him. I talked to him the other day. Not about a stadium but we talked.”

The mayor’s spokesperson said he’s not aware of this exchange between Davis and Johnson.

Yup that's the one thanks! I don't live in Sacto but very close and I'm just not sure there is money from the public to help Davis there. I still think in the end he sells to somebody like Ellison.

Why is Davis dragging his feet on a 2015/2016 Plan ?
Besides the Obvious - he's a poor manager.
The latest rumors I've heard - say he is looking in Las Vegas (UNLV), joint stadium, and the other, is to become an ALL ROAD TEAM.
This guy seems to miss the complete obvious answer to his problem.
IF he wants to keep the team (as it's owned now), why not just move it - to the Edward Jones Dome ??
You've got a place to play this year, and a New Stadium plan which could get him a NEW stadium by 2019.
..
I do not think he can afford to pay the relocation fee (and then pony up the additional fee to help build) by himself (and his partners will not help him pay it).
..
This guy seems like a total mess, as an owner.
Is he making any money at all ??
..
IF MLB can force Marge Schotz to sell the Reds - why can't the NFL tell Mark Davis to sell the Raiders.
I think this stadium issue ONLY gets resolved - until Davis is gone.

Or he moves to LA. But the common sense is that the raiders belong in Oakland and a cash infusion is the only way that happens. The only cash infusion (besides the NFL's $100M) would be through partial or total sale.
These California communities sure are playing hardball with these NFL teams. We LA Rams fans are very fortunate our owner has such deep pockets.

Hacksaw,
..
I really think the "old school" owners - still hold a deep grudge against Al Davis (for suing them - to move to L.A. so long ago).
This is their way - of getting back at the Davis family.
..
Mark Davis can not hold out two years to partner with the Rams in Los Angeles. I think that's what this whole - one year option for the Chargers was meant to accomplish.
I can not prove this.... It's just a deep belief I have.
..
Eventually, Mark is either going to run out of time, or run out of money.
In that time - the fans suffer, the NFL suffers, and everyone loses.
ALL I See - is two years of "drama" because of greed.
..
FORCE him to sell the team - and get this resolved.
Just my opinion.

This is very interesting, and is totally consistent with the old guard mentality. I do believe the grudge against Al is still there, alive and well.

So the LA option might be met by league resistance, or they might allow ESK to play harder ball with the Raiders. It always seemed to me that the $550M relo fee was a league attempt to out price LA for both of the Charaiders. It is safe to say that the Shield want's them to stay put.

If Oakland cannot or will not come up with the $$ then MD's options dwindle. Another partner or buyer would be an option. But that option could work for Oakland or a move to LA.

Relocation somewhere else too is an option as the relo-fee would be less prohibitive (I assume).

Are the Raiders losing money in Oakland? Sure their stadium sucks, but it is open for business and the fans don't seem to mind. If they are profitable, I can see this thing stretching out for a while.

In the meantime I don't dispute what you guys are saying but I can't rule out Raiders to LA until January 16th 2018.

No matter what they said publicly, I don't believe for a second the NFL has any intention of granting Mark Davis and the Raiders LA. Leaving an open slot in LA is going to give NFL owners perpetual leverage over their respective cities stadium deals to put up or shut up.
