In the heat of the 49er game I had some snide comments about our ILBs and TEs. After watching some tape I was only half wrong even though some comments were sarcastic, meant in jest. Still, our B/U TEs (and that is accurate) did block well most of the day. Marred by a holding penalty and a block in the back they made some plays including a key PI call but dropped several catchable balls. Hoping that improves against Chicago.

Even though Reeder made some great tackles and got better as the day went on his Whiff inside the Ten and inability in coverage did not help. I did see Reeder often taking on the TE but Rozeboom far too often engaged with the 2nd level blocker giving up 7 yards before getting in on a tackle. Too often he allowed the blocker to get his hands on him instead of throwing off the block (see Verse, Young, and Fiske). Granted, they are physically more intimidating but if Speights and/or Hummel are ready WE NEED THEM.

I called for McVay to throw in the kitchen sink and man did he? Tu Tu option pass, really creative run blocking schemes and a make shift OLine keeping Stafford relatively clean. able to go deep into our WR depth chart while keeping the team focused and believing they could win.

I think I went on a rant when the Rams waived Xavier Smith. Not shocked a team didn’t pick him up but totally stunned McVay didn’t see this guy starting Day One as our Punt AND Kick Returner on the 53. Overall, McVay is owed a game ball and our ST (with the same Coach) is vastly improved this year. On the Chicago!

Face it. What we see is what we get. Reeder and Rozeboom are gonna be playing. There won't be any higher level ILB's coming to help. All we can do is hope they get better. I don't have a lot of hope for Reeder. He would be better by now if it was ever gonna happen. Rozeboom has less experience so maybe he improves as he learns?

He’s gotta shed blocks. Hummel may get time before Speights and that may not happen until after the bye but we can’t face the RBs coming after Chicago without some serious help.

Speights is a better all around LB than all the others, Hummel is fast and the best in coverage. IDK why neither one is getting any D reps. They just not be trusted as far as knowing the D and/or communication with the front and back end.

…and your last comment is key. Xavier Smith, Tu Tu, Limmer, Bruss? Are they all just rising to the occasion or not getting the opportunities for fear of mistakes being made? I like Reeder AND Rozeboom, especially on ST but we need some quick, aggressive ILB help, NOW. Chicago will be interesting. I predict no change due to the offense we’re facing.
