Well he really didn't say anything. He simply said, "it ain't what 95% of you think".
Formulate your own scenarios.
Maybe he wanted too much money?
Maybe he didn't get along with Shula?
Maybe the Rams didn't get along with his agent?
Maybe he appeared not to have his head in it?
Maybe his production was significantly enhanced by Donald's presence?
Obviously Tennessee is trading him because he's a free agent after 2024. They also traded DHop to KC. But they have the #1 defense in the NFL. #3 vs the pass; #7 vs the run.

Right?
I think he's saying, they thought they were making the right decision trading Jones, but maybe it was not...

Your thought is the best I can do with it, I always wondered if they Rams wondered if they could count on EJ's knee to hold up. Is that the surprise?

We're probably never gonna know.
It could be as simple as this was going to be Jones' last year anyway, they liked what they had and took a "the future is now" approach to the defense. If the defense keeps getting better, they'll have a solid argument.
Then again Tennessee unloaded Jones too so maybe there's something else going on. Yeah you can say it's a lost season for them so now they're sellers but Jones is young and good, why not try and keep him around for the future?

I said this before but here goes again. I can't find it (or rather I couldn't find it the last time I discussed this and am not looking again) BUT Jones did say something in public about deserving an extension (the implication being he put in all this time and effort with the team and should be extended accordingly). Saying that in public could have doghoused him with the Rams.

IMO it is pretty clear that this wasnt based on a 'future is now " approach. EJ is way way better then Reeder/Rozeboom, we all knew it. If Sosa is be believed, it cant be about EJ wanting an extension because that is what most people think. The only thing you can get out of what McVay said is regret.....

I said it then and I’ll say it now. Biggest blunder, absolute self inflicted wound in this 2024 season, now half over. We’d be 5-2 were it not for the weird jettison of our top Defensive LB for a bag of chips. Now it threatens our chances this week. In Mcvay’s own words:
“I think I’ve been pleased with some of the things that guys have done. It’d be hard to deny the production that he’s had when you look at what he’s done at Tennessee and even just in his first week (in Seattle) last week,” McVay said. “He’s a great player and he did a lot of good things for us. I think all the decisions that we make in the moment we feel like are in the best interest. I’m not going to pretend and act like every decision is accurate. You try to be able to learn from it and apply it moving forward, but you know that you’re playing against a really well-respected player, mentally and physically tough. Seems like he’s always around the football. I wish him well and it’s going to be a great challenge going against him.”

I wish we knew more about how this went down. I suspect that the Rams had pressure to get something done that they were not ready to do.
Either Jones or his agent asking for contract talks when the Rams were not ready.
Pure speculation on my part. If this was entirely self inflicted, then I agree completely with above.

Jones is better than his replacements. But lets be real. He's a nice player. But not anything like a pro bowl talent. I seriously doubt he's the difference between 3-4 and 5-2. He's not a difference maker.
