I still think they'll sign him. He has no leverage. If he sits out too long he loses a year of eligibility. Then he'd be back next where in the same boat he is this year. 49ers can play hardball with him. Make him play on his 5th year deal. Franchise him next year. And the year after if they want. And they don't have to trade him.

But....

He's the only receiver they have that can get separation and make catches at a high level. Deebo was exposed in the Superbowl. He can't run a good route and make catches downfield that well. A single CB can cover him. Unless they stick with the screens and 7 yard passes over the middle. His play seems to be declining too. Kittle's 31 now. An age where these guys tend to get dinged up a lot more. CMC approaching the age where heavily used backs tend to decline.

Without Aiyuk Brock Purdy won't have that guy who can make plays consistently down the field. And honestly, I'm not convinced Purdy is anything close to elite. His arm is average if that. The system he's in is very quarterback friendly with all pro playmakers making things easier for him. He's due for a big payday next year.

When that all pro talent changes I have a feeling they will be paying elite money to a less than elite quarterback. Probably in the same boat Dallas is with Prescott. Even though he's not elite you have to pay him elite money because you could do worse if you don't. And end up in quarterback purgatory for years.

I agree Aiyuk has no leverage, but this is a bad look on the 9ers (and that makes me smile). He said it himself, they want to pay him like a number 2 receiver, but in trade talks are asking for a return on a #1. So which is it 9ers? It also shows imo that the 9ers don't really take care of their guys, which will only hurt them with free agents, and in negotiations going forwards. Something the Rams have consistently done the opposite of. Hell, the Rams will give you the contract you deserve, and THEN trade you (to a destination you want) just to make sure you do get paid!!

Man I love this team!!!

I think Aiyuk does have some leverage. The niners need to win this year as Purdy will get paid next year. I agree this gets done, but do the niners really want him to miss a part or all of TC? Bosa missed all of TC last year and it showed. Aiyuk missing camp brings signicant injury risk into play. It is all fun to see :D

Speaking of taking care of the players, RAMS time to get Stafford signed!!

Yeah, the best leverage he has is they need to win now. The window will be closing. Possibly as soon as next year. They could push money down the road to make it a two year window. But if it fails they could be mired in mediocrity or worse for several years. McCaffrey, Deebo, Kittle and Williams are going to be older. To expect them to play at the same high level the next two years might be asking too much. Heck, we could see some decline this year.
