retire- how old is the guy. Can't be much older than me.

He's 63 and he's recently had some health issues.

He actually collapsed at a Trojan game this year...

I always thought it was cool that the former Ram/Trojan was in charge of the AD at SC but I've seen more than a few people who are not only ready for him to go, they want his head. I didn't think he'd done a horrible job but don't really know. Maybe he was just there to weather the storm of the last few years of sanctions and now that they have all their scholarships back, they're moving on from him.

It's probably just a coincidence that this happens shortly after National Signing Day.
Health issues or booster issues?

IMO this is the perfect way for us to get rid of Jeff Fisher. He'd be much better as an AD than a Head Coach imo.
